Maggie, how long has Pablo been on the Risperdal? Normally Risperdal controls the aggression. We switched Karac from Risperdal to Geodon and that has been more effective without the side effects of the Risperdal. Karac is also on 40mg of Straterra and .1 mg of Clonidine. Karac is 11 and starting puberty. Karac's aggression started with puberty; he would bite and pinch. I am Karac's grandmother. I have worked with him every day for 8 years. When does Pablo take the Straterra? Sometimes Straterra causes Karac to have nausea if he has not had enough to eat before and after he takes it. When that happens Karac will become aggressive and I have learned to just immediately give him something to eat which always stops it.

I know how frustrating it is when these kids seem to regress, but I have found that there is usually a reason, and it is just a matter of figuring it out, and sometimes even when there doesn't seem to be a reason the behavior will just stop as abruptly as it started. I think the more language we can give them the less behavior problems they will have. Karac has finally learned to say, "I don't want to do this." Now, when I am trying to insist that he do something he doesn't want to do; instead of pinching me, he will say, "I don't want to do this."

These kids are all so unique, but their uniqueness makes them so interesting to me. Karac is so funny; he has rules for what he will do at my house and what he will do at his house. He will take a shower at my house, but he won't take a shower at home. He will drink grape juice at his house, but he won't drink it at mine. etc.

Sorry I am rambling on. Hang in there; you'll find a way to work things out. Let me know when you do. LOL, Pat K

Heidi, can I ask why he is on all those meds? You may be overmedicating him. Have you looked at/heard of DAN protocol? It really works and treats the causes not just the symptoms of autism. That said you may want to add calcium and magnesium citrates that helped calm my son when he became aggressive last December. Have you looked into what nutrients/vitamins those meds may be depleting? I know how you feel when they start regressing but take a deep breath and look at what's going on in the body. I found that though it may take a little trial and error, you can usually find out what's going on.

Hello everybody. My name is Maggie and I have a 7 yrs old son, Pablo who is moderately autistic. He was dx in Oct 2002 He is partially verbal and receives speech therapy in public school 2x a week. He is also in special day class. He is currently taking resperdol 1mg 3x day, and strattera 40mg 1x a day. Starting tomorrow will be taking 1/2 of 0.1 mg of Clonidine be cause of his VERY hyperactivity he has been exhibiting. I need some of advise on trying to curb some of his behavior. He has, as of March been very aggressive and hitting, throwing tantrums( more severe than usual)and not cooperating with his aides when asked to do something. He would before , I just don't understand what has happened to him. He was progressing well and now he has taken a giant leap backwards. He was sitting at the begining of the year with high functioning children but since he has started to touch and intimidate them they have moved him to the low fuctioning kids. He has now been copying there behavior like stemming- Flapping, tantrums on the floor unresponive to commands where as before he did not do that. He also has started bedwetting more often at night. The school advised me they might have to revise his IEP and change him to SED class (Emotionally Disturbed). what is a mother to do I came home today in tears out of fustration. sorry this is so long I just need to vent. Not to mention feeling helpless to my son. Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,,

Hi Maggie, I noticed you said that it started in March--could he be experiencing allergy trouble? A lot of our kids will act out behaviorally during allergy season. You may want to check with your pediatrician to see if you can try an allergy med. Also, that new placement may not be appropriate for him if he's picking up behaviors. Could he function in the previous placement if he had more support, like a 1:1 aide? Heidi Help with behavior problems!! Hello everybody. How long has he been on strattera? We took our dd off of it because of the issues like you are having with your son. We had on depakote because of seizures and risperdal because of the side affects of depakote. And then we added strattera too. For awhile all the meds worked. Then we started having horrible rage. And more seizures. I discovered that risperdal can cause seizures so we weaned her off. Then we had more rage which is a side affect of depakote. We were having less seizures though so we weaned her off of depakote. We were mainly trying to find the real . I was and am prepared to put her back on seizure meds if needed. We were still having the rage and then a lady who is NT told me that she was on strattera but quit taking it because it made her feel mad. Bingo! We quit the strattera. It was not a miracle but has been a whole lot calmer! We still have some problems but are starting her on Super Nu Thera and DMG.We are going to add some calcium and mag. too eventually. The psyciatrist she sees wanted to try risperdal so we did.In 3 days the seizures were back worse so I quit. She still has seizures but less than on meds so we aren't doing any right now. I will probably try a low carb diet first though before meds again.

Maggie,

DAN is a group of doctors and scientists who've banded together to get at the causes and treatments for autism. They've been around for quite a while and more doctors are joining every day. They have a protocol to follow to test and treat our children. These doctors are also on the forefront of the mecury/thimerosal in vaccine discovery and the colitus in the intestines. They have two conferences a year, one east coast and one on the west coast. I've been going to the east coast conferences for three years now. They're great and you get so much good info to use. You can find out more at their website. http://www.autism.com/ari/ and the east coast conference is actually coming up next week in Washington, DC (4/16-4/18) You can follow the link off the ARI website or go directly to conference brochure at www.danconference.com

I think you'll be glad you did. the ARI (Autism Research Institute) give lots of information on the DAN Protocol and has a list of DAN doctors

I am sure they can't do this because of the IDEA. They may tell you they can. You need to consult a Special Education attorney. They need to have a Behavioral Intervention Plan in his IEP and follow it. If he has a diagnosis of autism then the behavior is because of that not emotional disturbance. I have to say that of those families I am aware of that use the psychiatiric meds and those who use biomedical approach the biomed approach has the best results. Most children have no behavior problems.
