Guest guest
I need the advice of those experienced with extraction. I grow both Sweet Violets (Viola odorata) and Parma Violets (Viola odorata " Parma " ) and am interested in extracting their essence. It seems the simplest choices for this would be tincturing with alcohol or macerating with a fixed oil. As you can imagine, harvesting little violet flowers is quite laborious and the yield of flowers is small. Therefore, I wish to do the least amount of experimentation as possible so as to lower the risk to my precious harvest. Is it possible to extract Violet essence by tincturing with alcohol? If yes, how much alcohol should I use to ensure a strong tincture? I have 192 proof rectified grain alcohol and the total amount of my violet harvest may be about 1 quart of fresh flowers. Or would maceration with a fixed oil produce better results? If yes, what type and what amount of oil should I use? Has anyone used Ben Oil for maceration? I have read of its superiority among fixed oils for perfumery purposes. Is it available in the U.S.A.? Has anyone actually tried to extract violet essence before? Any advice from extraction experts would be greatly appreciated. Mark
