Anyone Seen THIS Behavior Before???

My five-year-old has aquired a new behavior that is most challenging

for us all....

This past October, had outpatient surgery to be circumcised. He

went through this quite well, and all was fine. Before the surgery,

the Urologist asked me every possible question on the subject of

autism and 's behaviors, and assured us that " the parents are

truly the experts " (let's keep that in mind the next time we are

challenged by the " know-it-alls " who don't have an autistic child).

Anyway, the healing process of this circumcision was quite typical,

without complications; but unfortunately, has noticed that

something has " changed " . It (the penis) has now become his NEW BEST

FRIEND!! Whenever he thinks about it, he pulls it out, plays with

it, talks to it (in a baby dialect), and it doesn't matter WHERE he

is at the time. He wants the world to know!! The teacher, the school

bus driver, the behavior therapist, the waiter at Denny's......his

dad has stopped taking him out with him as often, because he's

paranoid that he'll do it.

We constantly tell him that it is PRIVATE, and he should keep it to

himself, and others shouldn't see it...PUT IT BACK IN YOUR PANTS!!

Yes, we've even had to endure tantrums because he's been told that

he can't do this. It's his new obsession....we're hoping that this

will pass, but for now it's an ongoing battle.

Any suggestions?

Aletha.

Aletha,

Prevention can be your best friend. Have him wear overalls that you pin

closed when going out in public.

You might try a belt that you fasten in the back of his pants.... or sweats

with a string that you double tie.

Secondary, let him know that the bathroom or his bedroom is the only place

he can play with his new favorite toy. If you have a photo of his room or

bathroom, you may give him a visual reminders.

Complement him when he has appropriate behavior, too.

Good luck.... I had this going on with twins for a while.
