Guest guest
Older people live longer if they have found a valued role in life over which they can exert control, concludes a national survey of retired Americans aged 65 and older. The research was conducted by scientists at the University of Michigan. " I think what's important here is that it is one more paper ... that shows in a scientific fashion what we've been observing ... for years, " says J. Gorbien, MD, director of the section on geriatric medicine at Rush Medical College in Chicago, and an associate professor of internal medicine. " That is, when people have a sense of purpose, people have control over their destinies, they are certainly going to have a perceived improvement in quality of life. [Why] people actually live longer if they have a sense of purpose or control is a little more vexing to understand.
