Hi Melody,

I think it depends on how fast you can use up 5 lb of seeds, I have

the remainder of a five pound can of Chinese cabbage seed stored in

my freezer but I'm just one person and it might take me years to use

that up. If you have space in your freezer and you don't know how

long it will take to finish a 5 lb can, it wouldn't hurt to freeze them.

You are right about the high price of broccoli seed. I often use

different kinds of cabbage as a substitute since they are in the same

plant family as broccoli and likely have similar nutritional value at

a lower cost. Try the Red, Green or Chinese Cabbage or the Broccoli

Raab, if you can find it, for a lower cost alternative to Broccoli.

Red Cabbage sprouts are also very pretty.

If your house is temperature controlled, and you are using it up fairly

so if it will take a while to use it up, yes, freeze them like you have been

doing.

Hi all.

My house DOES NOT HAVE AIR CONDITIONING. I can't stand the cold because of my

arthritis. Although we do have it in the bedroom in the hot summer months. But

I'm just fine the way the temperature is. It probably gets to be over 70 or 72

in the kitchen (especially if I cook anything).

So I'll do the ziplock bag in the freezer thing. These 10 lbs plus the pound of

broccoli will probably last me until August.

I sprout each and every day. I even bring some sprouts for my breakfast sandwich

at Dunkin. I love to sprout and I love the greening up in my trays.

And when the Fed Ex guy came to the door with my BIG package, I burst out in

song. He burst out laughing.

I opened the package and there were these two 5 lb cans of seeds. I had never

seen anything like this before.

I had cut it pretty close with my seeds so I had to open up both the Fenugreek

and the Radish Seeds.

The seeds are now germinating in my mason jars.

I add sprouts to everything.

I will look into the Red Cabbage ones. (for next time)

Oh, one more question. Does anyone have the Handy Pantry Sprout Garden.

It's $25.45 and you get 3 trays. I gather they sit on top of each other.

Anyone ever tried these?

shipping that you would pay for Pantry Sprout Garden, would buy you a lot

And here's a good question. This morning, I transferred my seeds to ziplock bags

and now I have two emtpy 5 pound cans. Can I use these for my fenugreek, or my

mung beans. THEY WOULD BE PERFECT. With the lid on, it's nice and dark (like

needed for mung beans), Only I'm not sure that a can is the best growing medium.

My initial thought is no, if they are going to be the sprouters. If you

are going to put a sprouting device inside of the can to keep out light,

then yes. Fenugreek doesn't need dark. I sprout mine on the kitchen sink.

If that's what I'm thinking it is, shop around. I got one for $12. I

never use it - I couldn't get it to drain well enough and all my

sprouts rotted every time I used it.

stackable thing on various websites for up to $31.00. I got the catalogue from

handypantry (when I got my seeds), and this sprouter (it's round by the way),

was on sale for $25.00 and change, and when I clicked on the buy it option, I

found it was on sale for $22.00. So I got it.

I'll update and tell you all if my sprouts rot or do well!

Ok, I've seen the round version. It looks a little bigger than the

square ones. I would probably still have bad luck with it since it's

otherwise the same design. I hope you have great luck with it! Let me

The round stackable tray sprouter is in constant use here...I have better

sprouts from this than the jars....the jars sprouts are good, just jumbled.  I

bought mine at a health food store for about $27, it's green and about 9 "

diameter.

Well, since I love my little square one, I'll probably LOVE the 9 inch 3 tray

round one.

I just harvested some broccoli/radish sprouts and they are now greening in

indirect sunlight. I love when they start to flower.

Oh, I have a question FOR ALL YOU FENUGREEK SPROUTERS OUT THERE.

Exactly how long do you sprout your Fenugreek?

The reason I ask is that during the sprouting cycle, they change the appearance.

They initially start out looking like Rice Krispies, then I germinate them and

in two or three days, they look like little Rice Krispies with little sprouts,

and then in 5 days, they SPROUT, and no longer look like rice krispies.

I'm not sure when we are supposed to eat them. After 2 days, after 4 days, or

when they are LONG SPROUTS.

And do ou ever stir fry them. I ALWAYS stir fry my sprouted mung beans for two

minutes before I put them in my salads. They taste kind of toasty and really

zing up my salad.

I'm just wondering if I can also do that with the long version of my fenugreek.

I always use them raw in a salad. I'm just wondering if one can stir fry them

also.

So give me some fenugreek tips here. Don't forget, I have 5 lbs of the stuff in

my ziplock bags. lol

I think I misspoke concerning the price savings of cabbage over

broccoli. The last time I mail ordered seed was over a year ago and

the prices have more than doubled. I distinctly remember paying less

than ten dollars a pound for one pound of red cabbage and one pound

that was ninety percent red cabbage with ten percent broccoli at

Sprout House. The Chinese Cabbage I get from Handy Pantry.

I can't believe the prices on some of these things, fortunately I

have a local health food store where I can get fenugreek and green

lentils for 3 dollars a pound and alfalfa and clover for 5 dollars a

pound. Plus I really hate those shipping charges.

I've found that the bulk kamut and bulk green lentils from Whole Foods sprout.

They are very inexpensive. I didn't have much luck with their bulk quinoa

though. You could buy just a small amount to try.

You can eat sprouts ar any stage. I go 6 days on fenugreek. On day four,

I start another batch so that I don't run out. They are YUMMY!!

Yeah, those are the perfect size for baking bread. There's a

traditional Russian Easter bread that's cylindrical like that - a

Russian woman in my parish always makes a loaf or two for her blessing

basket and she said she bakes them in coffee cans.

That size can is also great to keep on hand, with a lid, for people

with small children. When you have to take a barfy kid to the doctor,

it's a life-saver to have a can for them to puke in if they have to go

in the car or in the waiting room. Then you snap the lid on and it's

all neat and tidy until you can throw it out (or wash it out and put

it with the sick supplies if you're extra thrifty.) Oh, and it's

amazing how quickly you get to the head of the waiting list when your

kid yarps in the waiting room. LOL That's a big advantage to having

the can instead of rushing them outside where the receptionist can't

hear.
