There are, a lot of foods that are not considered paleo that we eat and are

probably very healthy foods. The reason some are not on the list is most of

them are new world foods and were not available to our our evolving bodies.  The

paleo diet is based on foods available in the old world.  Admittedly, foods

today are, for the most part, a poor copy of wild foods our foraging ancestors

ate.

Most people who follow a paleo diet are not purists and add a few odds and ends

in and eat outright forbidden foods on occassion.. I did yesterday..

But the two big groups of forbidden foods are detrimental to our health as more

than 50% of people have senstitives to one or both groups, grains and dairy.

We shouldn't eat them... rice is often the exception and it is one of the

exceptions in my diet.

As for peas, I believe they are considered legumes along with beans therefore

forbidden, same with peanuts, though I eat peanut butter.

Which is why I have my rule, can't eat raw, can't eat cooked....  So if I had

some fresh peas, I would probably eat them, and I do occassional love a french

fry and I east peppers and other new world foods that one can pick out of the

garden and munch down on.  But my goal is to keep the forbidden at a distance

and only rarely indulge in them..

Do those of Native American extraction choosing to follow the Paleo

diet make exceptions when it comes to New World foods? And are there

lists of New World paleo foods for them? And, if so, what about people

of mixed genetic heritage, part Native American, part European? Is

there any research about which portions of our genetic heritage we

should listen to if choosing to follow a Paleo lifestyle?

It's true of many programs. I am high raw, but not 100% raw. Yesterday

I had a lovely vegetable soup cooked on the stove with broccoli,

Brussels sprouts, peas, corn and tomatoes. Additionally, I'm

transitioning toward a Natural Hygiene lifestyle but put some cumin

and cayenne in my soup (natural hygiene teaches to avoid spices.) I

just felt like having some soup.

I don't know about sprouted wheat, but I know that people with gluten

intolerance and celiac can still have wheatgrass juice because there's

no gluten in the grass, just in the grain.

I love figs and have been thinking about usingt hem to make something

" fig newton-y " . I think I have a recipe for raw fig newtons but it

uses a dehydrator so I haven't made it.

Your figgy pecan pie bites sound real yummy. I have never liked

regular pecan pie (and I grew up in the South so I had plenty of

opportunities to try it! LOL), but I think I would probably like raw

pecan pie. Especially with figs!

I believe the reason for this is because grains have natural

pesticides (the anti-nutrients I believe) that are a protection

against animals and pests that might eat it. The grain is the seed of

the next generation so it protects itself until it sprouts, once

sprouted it is a plant and doesn't need the protection anymore.

No dehydrator for you huh?

We discovered a new use for mine today, we found

out the water heater was leaking (we hadn't

noticed it until I found mushrooms growing out of

the carpet. One of the weirdest things I've ever

seen). One of the boxes that got wet had some

irreplaceable magazines that my room mate has had

for 30 years or so. He had the idea of drying

them in there, it has worked beautifully!

By paleo standards, grains are starvation foods.  In other words you eat them

when threre is nothing else to eat..

Sparrow,

By paleo standards, even native americans should eat old world foods since their

time here is too short to have evovled to eat the foods... I eat new world

foods, because it is my own opinion, that providing the raw rule can apply, and

the foods here full of nutrients, not anti-nutrients as in grains in beans, eat

them...  potatoes can't be eaten raw, so even though you can cook and eat them,

you have to cook them to eat, so they can't be paleo.

Both my husband and I have (at different times, both before we met

each other) seen mushrooms growing out of carpets. It's a side-effect

of affordable housing in Chicago. :-P

I've heard others say the same thing about animal flesh, actually.

Humans are very flexible creatures that can survive on a wide range of

foods. The trick is figuring out which of those are optimal for the

system. Dogs are quite similar. I've seen very healthy dogs that were

raw vegan. But that's probably not the optimal dog diet. :-)

Both really good sites, one (the first I think) is by the author of

the book on the subject if not the idea itself, at least in it's

current form.

After reading the definition of Paleo on Wikipedia, it looks like raw

vegan fits within the parameters. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds.

Sure, there's more in paleo like lean meats and seafood and paleo can

be cooked, but by my reckoning, the " Garden of Eden diet " is a sub-set

of Paleo and not contrary to Paleo's philosophy (unless one *must*

cook one's food and *must* eat meat to be considered Paleo)

I have no idea Sparrow, but the Native Americans evolved in the old world...
