Guest guest
I have spent countless hours searching for the dried flowers of Jasminum odoratissimum - True Yellow Jasmine, to no avail. It is native to the Canary Islands. Supposedly, it is the only species of jasmine which retains its fragrance after being dried. All bulk herb wholesalers I know carry Jasminum officinale - Common or Poet's Jasmine, which, of course, is scentless when dry. The very few that list their jasmine as " odoratissimum " are really carrying the " officinale " , which, of course, is scentless when dried. It's easy to tell the difference because the Poet's jasmine has white, not yellow flowers. I know it's a long-shot, but will ask nonetheless. Does anyone know where you can get dried True Yellow Jasmine flowers? If not, maybe someone knows where you can buy the living plant? Although I need rather large quantities of the stuff, I'm desperate enough to grow and harvest my own! I would be so grateful. Mark
Guest guest
- depending upon where you live jasmine can be grown to monstrous sizes and can be rather like honeysuckle in taking over a long fence and the trees and shrubs nearby-(think twice before planting it) Go googling and there is at least one nursery which sells the plants you seek but it all depends upon your zone We are in zone 9 and everything grows here and we have to fight too much growth Here in the gulf coast we have 2 kinds which thrive- conferate (white) and carolina (yellow) I have worked with the flowers to obtain scent and believe the literature when it says it takes mountains of flowers. We have it on 2 fences and up 2 trees and it took an amazing amount of labour for such an small output. Also be careful One year we bought from a reputable nursery and someone had mislabeled the jasmine and we carefully planted asian non-flowering jasmine -- very aggressive and we are still pulling it out travels underground and grows as you watch it jingles from cattail cove >

It does smell good, but now I wonder if I got the wrong one too? How can you tell the difference between the Grasse one and the flore pleno? If you note, if they don't have a price with the plant, they don't have it. A lot of stuff on their site is just for reference. They also note the scent is delicate. > Anya http://.com The premier site on the Web to discover the beauty of Natural Perfume / Join to study natural perfumery

Hi : Go to the yet-unlaunched ;-) http://anyasgarden.com to see a pic of the true Grasse J. off. grandi. See it's a simple flower? I'll bet the one you have has an extra swirl petal in the middle, and longer, narrower petals. > > > I now have the Grasse grandi from another soure, but what a >disappointment! > >Why is it a dissappointment? That was a misstatement on my part -- I meant what a disappointment that I had been tincturing the wrong flowers all along, thinking it was the J. off. grandi, letting it take over a 25' stretch of back fence ;-) Still, I adore the Flore Pleno, it's scent is VERY close to the Grasse, and it's no disappointment in the long run. >Their grand duke > sambacs are gorgeous! > > > I too grow J. sambac " Grand Duke of Tuscany " . The double flowers >are magnificent, as is its scent - green and spicy! GDT isn't just double flowered, it's like a small carnation. The Belle of India is double flowered. You might want to check the pics at Top Tropicals to confirm what variety you have. The GDT is very fruity and sweet, with a touch of spicy and green, but the sweet fruitiness hits my nose first. My flowers are small carnations, too. To my nose, the GDT is fruity, spicy and green, but not sweet. I would characterized the grandiflorums as extremely sweet, but not green and not spicy like my sambacs. I did check out Top Tropicals. What they call J. odoratissimum IS NOT the True Yellow Jasmine - It's J. floridum. Mark
