Try getting some Agarwood (oud as it is commonly known there)

Try getting some Hina & Shamama

IT is a complex blend of many herbs distilled together over sandalwood

Oil

They are wonderful materials. Deep rich exotic Orientals

Traces in perfumes give absolutely amazing effects

Yes,

Any organic sources of ambrette steam or hydro distilled would be

wonderful. We are looking to change allstock into organic and/or wild

crafted. Any sources would be fantastic.

Hello Amna,

What a wonderful trip! How I would love to be in a spice market in

any of the Mideast or North African countries. I know I would go

crazy buying way too much stuff. If you want frankincense, buy the

Hougari from Oman. It is the highest quality. As for myrrh, the

highest quality is from Yemen. Make sure you test the Ouds

carefully as they are very often adulterated. Besides these items, I

would search for some of the rarer " spices " such as Balm of Gilead

(an oleo-resin like myrrh and frankincense which is produced by a

shrub related to myrrh whose Scientific Name is Commiphora

gileadensis). I hope you speak Arabic, otherwise it will be

difficult or impossible to request or identify items in English.

Also,I would look for high-quality white sandalwood from Mysore,

India; spikenard roots from India; and galbanum resin from Iran.

Hope you have a wonderful trip and happy spice hunting.

I would also look for Ambergris. I donot know if it is available

there, but I know in some parts of the middle east it is available.

Although not the most ethical thing, I hear from one of my suppliers

that there is very good sandalwood in dubai. I am sure it is poached

out of India, but muight be worth at least a smell. Enjoy the trip.

*** you could try for some Lotus oil but be careful -

Egypt has has restrictions about taking it with you

out of the country. don't know about Dubai.

Also there are hucksters that will try to peddle

synthetic stuff- so keep well tuned nose.

Agar is a great sugg. also. ***

Any idea why the restrictions? Any way around them? Their lotus is not the

same lotus as from India, theirs is the sacred blue waterlily Nymphaea

caerulea and the Indian is Nelumbo nucifera.
