If you are talking about applied behavior or Intensive Behavior Intervention, most people say that 40 hours in the least a child should get but realistically you are lucky to get any. 12 days is not enough time for you to get a lot of education on autism but if your system is anything like ours you can always go back, as you learn, and ask for more. There are some lists that and sites that are from UK so you might throw autism, United Kingdom in a web search and see if you find anything that will help you. I had some sites a long while back but that was two computer crashes ago so they are lost to me now. Evan sees a psychiatrist through telemedicine about once a month. He was put on .5 mg of Risperdal and slowly worked up to see how it would help his anger outbursts. It did help but we had to keep increasing it as he got older. Now we are using the new med, Abilify, and it is also working will and we are slowly going off the Risperdal. Risperdal increases appetitite and Abilify does not. Of couse, being a new med the Abilify is expensive. You might want to check on taking all artificial foods out of her diet. Sometimes things as small as red or yellow food coloring can cause a child problem. Also grain products containing gluten and dairy products containing casein can cause problems. There are so many things that can be causing you daughters problems and might help as well as anything she gets at school. Many parents have found that special diets have helped their children recover or at least improve. We tried the diet but did not get the results that we hoped for. But then Evan's autism is probably inherited and not caused by outside influence. We have some missing family histories so we just have immediate family to look at on my husband's side and also Evan's dad's side. Guest guest Posted May 21, 2003 Report Share Posted May 21, 2003 Sabina, I would not want to get your hopes up that it gets easier but at the same time I do not want to say that it does not. Like anything else it is possible to go either way. Truthfully a lot depends on the diagnose that your daughter has. High to med functioning are able to do much better than low to medium functioning. which is where Evan is. Evan has improved over the years and I still look for more improvement but I do not expect him to be completely recovered any longer. There are some that are recovered but not nearly as much as we would like. If it has taken 5 years for you to get your daughter's dx I am going to assume that she is much higher functioning than Evan. I mean we were pretty sure by the time he was 2 that he was autistic. Started worrying about it before then. And deep down I have not given up the hope that some day he will be talking. He has spoken before but the words are so far between times, but we do know that he has speech if he could just get the wires straigthened out that keeps him from using his speech. You have a lot to learn and the more you learn the more you will be able to help your daughter. Always remember also, that you are the best advocate that your daughter can have. You are the one who knows her. Guest guest Posted May 22, 2003 Report Share Posted May 22, 2003 Sabina, if your daughter is talking, she is ahead of Evan. He only got to mama, dada, nana, baba and then stopped that. He walked about 18 months but that did not worry me too much because my oldest did not walk until he was 16 months old. His father also walked at that age and he was a premmie. His mom was carrying twins and fell, killing one. They did not know that until she went into labor two months later. But that was my ex-husband and so does not mean anything about Evan except that I had learned that not all kids walk at 9 months like my baby sister had. I have read many books on autism but I must say that I learned the most from the internet. This is really an age of learning. I must add, just in case that you have not already been told this, that they are learning more each year and that is good because more and more are being diagnosed with these Disorder. I cannot believe that they are all genetic either. There is something that is causing this and hopefully it will be discovered and hopefully we will be able to recover our kids.
