Sprouting on the 'Cheap'

Have been sprouting about a year now and mostly disappointed with

using the jar-on-the-side routine. Rinsing was easy that way but

hard to rinse and keep the seeds in place.

So I experimented using a 5 " x 7 " x 2 " (high) flimsy plastic-like see

thru container that I had gotten sunflower seeds in from my regular

grocery store. Jab holes on the bottom and bottom sides of container

(a sharp knife works well). Cut a piece of window screen to fit in

the bottom of the container (screen sb cut to fit real tight so seeds

don't fall off the screen). Added one tablespoon of sprouting mix

(soaked overnight and rinsed) and spread it onto the screen.

Spreading seeds out equally over the space of the screen is the most

difficult part of this process (I use the back of a spoon and my

fingers). I set the container in a styrofoam container to catch

excess water that didn't drain fully from the container. Use the top

of the container to cover it while growing.

I rinse the seeds at night and in the morning. After a full day the

seeds stay in place on the screen pretty good. I rinse from the

faucet using water at the slowest trickle.

My sprout yield has gone up significantly and I don't have any of

the 'yucky' stuff. You will find that the screen holding the seeds

actually grows upward with the seeds but they pull out very nicely

when harvesting. I wash the items after harvesting and reuse for my

next batch.

See pictures under 'adrianpv' for finished sprouts with views from

the top and side.
