Guest guest
HI Barbara, I get all my open pollinate seed from Victory and Baker Seed on line. We always choose the oldest varieties. We also look for ones that mature quickly , cold and drought tolerant and store well. It is important to know which plants are self fertilzing or else you will have to hand pollinate to insure a good crop. Willis Orchards are a good source for bushes and trees. many will grow indoors. Baker has reported that almost all the oldest open pollinated corn has now been contaminated w/ GMO. It is not looking that good for us health nuts. The only thing that I do not agree w/ as far as Caramia vids go, is that she sterilizes her soil. It is my understanding that the microbial life of the soil is essential. it breaks down the organic compounds to where the plants can absorb the. I have been growing for years. I compost w/ red wiggler worms. Some Aggie schools studies have shown that plants fertilized w/ their castings are some of the most healthy prolific plants. I think the worms are tiny gods. They take nasty smelling decomposing fruit and veggie scraps and turn them into sweet smelling soil amendments. If this financial crisis deepens we are all going to need to be way more self sufficient. I have already heard reports of some of the larger cargo ships sitting empty, the trucking industry slowing and now many retail stores nation wide closing. Towns like Palm Springs, which are usually quite busy this time of year are even closing doors. I am in the Southern US and have a great winter garden going. Soon, I will be set to get some chickens. I am a vegetarian.... I would be vegan, but I love those eggs way too much! Best of Luck and Happy Growing! Only half my plants came up, but I would still buy from them again. I assume it was gardener error, not seed error. Other than half my stuff not growing (which was probably my fault), I was very happy with the company. And the stuff that did come up was awesome.
