Lois, we have just put Karac on Risperdal. How much does your son weigh, and

has he had any side effects from the Risperdal? How much is he taking? Is

your son verbal? What has the Risperdal done for him? Karac was only on

prozac when he was much younger and for only a short time. It just seemed to

make

him hyper. Pat K

Lois, I have had the same problem as you except than in addition to

aggression Whitney(9) has also developed screaming tantrums. At first the Prozac

seemed

to help and gave her the giggles, but after a month of aggression and

tantrums, Yesterday I decided to stop giving her it. I dont have any advice

cause I'm

looking for some myself, but I know what your going through.

When my son was on prozac, the aide found him literally climbing on the rafters

in the boy's room. He could have killed himself if he fell, but school

personnel swore that it was helping him! My son was also on risperdal and it

seemed to help him at first, but 25 pound weight gain like most kids. My son's

current neurologist does not like risperdal because he says kids quickly reach a

plateau and you have to continually increase the dosage. I have also heard the

same thing from some parents.

Hi pat!

JJ is taking 0.5mg or resperdal 2 times a day. (Morning and Night) It has

helped him alot with agression. It started to get agression when he hit

puberity. I know a side effect of resperdal is weight gain BUT JJ is 15 and

weighs a whopping 102 pounds!! haha!

JJ can put small sentences together but " Chit-chats " to himself all the time.

He is under the land autism waiver and gets music therapy, horseback

riding, and 15 hours a week of one on one. Lois

Evan's telemedicine doctor kept slowly upping Evan's Risperdal but there was

a limit, he said to how much he upped it because he wanted to keep it

available in case he got real aggressive as he got older. It is strange

that those on the bipolar list complain a lot about loss of bladder control

with their kids on Risperdal but the doctor either denies the problem or say

it is rare. Joane, was climbing on top of the bathroom stalls a

couple of years ago but he was going through a manic phase because of his

Adderall and no mood stabilizer. He had a counselor trying to catch him and

take him to the office for slugging a kid in class who had been hitting him

on the play ground. panicked on him and lead him a merry chase around

the school grounds, ending up in the bathroom. When he finally got

down, he threw him over his shoulders and carried him to the office. This

was during the time I was fighting mental health and the school pscyhe for a

bipolar dx. I got it from a private pdoc just before I yanked him to

homeschool him.

Lois, Evan is 9 and weighs 95 lbs all ready. He does not have too much to

grow to catch up to me in height. I think he has grown a couple of inches

since he was measured at the doctor's and then he was 55 " . I wish Evan could

put any kind of sentence together or even a few words. I have not given up

hope yet.

Pat,

JJ has more language now then he did at age 9. It is hard for JJ to have a

conversation tho. If you ask him something he will answer with a yes-no or a

small sentence. The music therapy has helped him have more language. Lois

I have an epal in New Zealand whose son learned to talk by her singing her

conversations with him. She was wondering if it might work on Evan but he

did not seem interested in it although a girl on his bus seems to talk by

singing her conversations. Evan likes music but has not attempted to keep

tune with it except to bounce in tune to it.

Lois, are there any web sites where I can get info on this, and maybe some

teaching products? Whitney and I do a lot of singing at home, and shes starting

to sing things she wants and I'll sing the answer back. Example: " mom I'm

hungry: " whitney its cooking " Whitney does talk good, but shes in the forth

grade

and at a first grade level. Math is the worst for her. Seeing as how she loves

music and singing, this might be what she needs to learn better. Any info

would be appricated.

That's a good idea. I think Karac could learn to do that. We have made

conversation out of some of the rhymes that he knows. i.e. " Hey Diddle Diddle " ;

I

say, " What did the cat do? " he says, " played the fiddle " ; I say, " and what

did the cow do? " he says, " he jumped over the moon. " I say, " What did the

little dog do? " He says, " he jumped over the moon. " etc. You get the idea.

I just wish we could get rid of the spells of pain that Karac is having! Is

Evan ever going to get off Risperdal? Do you think it would stop the loss of

bladder control? Does he control the BM's? Blessings, Pat K

Pat, Evan normally controls his bowel movements but not always in the manner

that is appropriate. Sometimes he will go outside and then put it into the

kids' pool. Such fun!

I am sure hoping that once he gets completely off the Risperdal the wetting

will stop but now I am worrying that he has been doing it so long that it

has become behavioral. He rarely does it at home or when he goes to town,

except for when he was on the Tenex for a short time. I did not give him

any yesterday but he is still getting 1.5 mg while at summer school. He gets

out of summer school July 3rd. He sees his telemedicine doctor July 14th. He

may raise his Abilify another 5 mg then or leave him where he is.

This reminds me of the time I was singing Old Mc to my granddaughter

and I asked her what he had on his farm and she said " french fries. " I thought

it was a pretty good answer myself.
