Guest guest
Copal resin Does anyone else love the smell of Copal resin incense? I've been looking around for a Copal absolute or essential oil, but I haven't seen anything. I know I could probably do a tincture in Alcohol, but I'd much rather buy some premade. ~Pixie Scented Hi, I too like the smell of copa resin, but not when it's burning! Copal wood happens to be what the Mexican's use to carve the alebrijes (wooden figurines)for which they are known. I happen to have a collection of those. I guess I just like everything copal! Liberty Natural carries it - it's somewhat reminiscent of Sandalwood Have you tried Balsam of Peru? This is a beautifully warm EO and Eden Botanicals carries a lovely product. I have a feeling you may develop a liking for the Peru Happy scenting~ ~

I've found that copal resin doesn't have much smell *unless* it's burning (same with dragon's blood). I think that to capture the scent of the burning resin, mild frankincense with a small bit of styrax (for the plastic smell) and maybe the tiniest hint of pine works.. of course, the result is not as acrid as the real smoke. -Xplo

I do have Copbaiba Balsam in my perfumery arsenal. Exciting! I'll have to check out the Peru Balsam at Eden Botanicals. Their products are great. Cheers! I found some myself at my hometown favorite EO e~tailer at Nature's >Gift...copaiba balsam! Ahem. <cough, cough> , honey, you have to learn to shop around ;-) NG wants $15 for a half ounce. libertynatural (I got mine there, it's wonderful) -- you can get a freakin pint, 16 ounces for that price. Sometimes hometown isn't always best -- esp. if the markup is from Mars, lol. Guest guest
NOT that I do all my scientific research on ethnobotany on Google, but since, in Jeanne Rose's defense, the ethnobotany of Central America and South America, where these plants grow, is very sketchy, IMO, so, to google I went. Here's a copalicious link I like: http://www.tropilab.com/copaiba.html Then see, this company sells it as copal: vhttp://www.maya-ethnobotanicals.com/product_buy.phtml/herbid_282/category_searc\ h The search for C. officinalis yielded 28,000 results. For C. officinalis and copal 11,300. Obviously the names sound the same: copial, copiaba. Purdue says C. langsdorfii is copal. I just woke up, need to get on the road, and so and haven't dug into this too deeply, but as an ethnobotanist I can see where all the confusion comes in. used what he thought was a good ref - -Jeanne Rose. If we check back further, I'm sure she thought she had good refs, as many sources say C. officinalis is copal. In fact, this site says the Genus name comes from the word copal -- backwards engineering ;-) http://waynesword.palomar.edu/pldec298.htm He also cites the fact that copal is a common term to indicate the resin, and that many trees (as we now know) get the name. Using Bursura copal, I got 21,000 hits: http://www.google.com/search?num=100 & hl=en & lr= & newwindow=1 & q=Bursera+copal & btnG=\ Search I have to run, and will be gone most of the day, but happy hunting to those who are interested, and I think we have a copal-istic war going on here, lol. I'd love to get it straightened out, but I think that would be almost as impossible as straightening my hair. At least, that's my opinion BC (before coffee.)
