Guest guest
Pat~~ What is going on with Karac? I hope he's ok. Rose Karac Structure and routine is what all kids thrive on, but our kids especially need it. Structure and routine are also very hard to have in a chaotic house such as ours. Evan's telemedicine doctor keeps telling me that Evan needs more structure at home and I look at him and tell him that is impossible without getting rid of most of the family. I can tell by the way that he looks at me that he thinks I am a hopeless case and I guess I am but I am the one living here and I am doing the best this old woman can. Their mom is fighting depression again but not as bad as it has been. Just enough to keep her from feeling good about herself but not the rages. and I took Evan and to Mc's today since was staying at a friend's house. While I ordered the food took them into the play area. When I got there she was looking reading to leave and Evan was throwing a fit. He had been screaming at some of the other children and was refusing to sit at the table she had picked. I thought when he saw the food he would calm down but he did not so I suggested that we just leave. He did not like that either and grabbed me and the tray and took us to another table. His agitation was all over another family sitting at the table we usually sit at. Since he could not get them to leave he settled on sitting at other tables we have sat at before, closer to the door. Once he was happy with the table arrangements he sat down and devoured his cheeseburger and fries and part of 's food and mine! Then he got up and went to the play area content as ever. If Karac's mom is bipolar, it is certain that the stress of raising Karac is going to make it worse. If she starts dealing a lot with depression it would be wise if she sees a doctor about it. We tried using just Omega 3's which work for some people but did not help us all that much. I hated it but found that I have to take something myself or beware. I do not know why I can understand how and the boys need it but think I should be strong enough not to. My upbringing I guess. I am glad to hear that Karac finally had a bm. Since I put on the Primal Defense he has not had a problem with constipation. He has had a problem since he was little. Although none of us ever told him it was nasty, somehow he got the idea and held himself as long as possible and then could not go. I hope that Karac continues to get better and they can stabilize him. It is so heartbreaking to not know what our kids need and see them in such pain. Guest guest
Karac had a terrible attack of aggression that lasted all day last Tuesday. It took me, my husband, and a therapist to control him. We don't know if it came on from my daughter-in-law suddenly taking him off of Abilify or if it was from constipation, but we admitted him to Childrens Medical and they have treated him for his blocked bowels and have put him on Risperdal. They have the bowels functioning now, and he has not been aggressive in several days. I just worry about the side effects of Risperdal; also it makes me sad to remember that he was doing great last year on no medication. I think he will be coming home soon. Guest guest
Oh Pat~~ I'm so sorry, I know how hard it is. As for the Risperdal, we just met with Dr. Goldberg (fr CA) this week). Regarding Risperdal, he isn't concerned about it in the short-term, but he is VERY concerned with it in the long run with regard to osteoporosis. Just thought I'd pass this information on to you. I think it's time your daughter seriously considers taking Karac off milk. We were in your shoes and now we are nearly aggression-free. I know it's hard, but it can be done slowly. First, start with milk, and then cheese and then sort out all the tidbits of foods that have milk in them. He may have some weeks of aggression with withdrawal, but the trade-off is well worth it. Pat, you know I don't want to preach, but Kristian and Karac just seem so alike in their autism. I really hope he is feeling better, I feel so bad for him. Guest guest
Rose, thanks so much for your information and suggestion; that is very helpful. Yes, the boys do seem very similar. I visited Karac in the hospital tonight. He was a lot better. They said he had a very good day. I think he will be coming home Friday. They are giving him Clonidine and .5 mg's of Risperdal at night and .5 mg's of Risperdal in the morning. That is a pretty low dose of Risperdal; isn't it? He is not having any more aggression and seems alert. I am so happy that things are going well for you. Pat K
Guest guest
Betty, how does behave when he has those nightmares? Karac started having what we called night terrors last August; that is when we first started medicating him. I felt like they were brought on by the Tetanus shot we gave him at that time. In my ignorance, I didn't know that the Tetanus shot contained thimerosal! I am expecting Karac to be out of the hospital by this Friday; I'm looking forward to it. I have another therapist coming to help me next Monday, and if we have to start over at square one, we will do that. Any more trips to MC's? LOL, Pat K
Guest guest
That is a low dose for Risperdal but it is what Evan's doctor started him on. takes Clonidine at night to help him sleep. It helps him get to sleep but he still has those terrible bipolar nightmares. Guest guest
Pat~~ Friday? Wow, that really is quite a visit. I believe .5 is a small dosage. Did I tell you the time Kristian drank half a bottle? He had at least 35 times his dosage. The ER dr. said it was safe in adults to over 350 mgs. Guest guest
Pat, when has nightmares or night terrors--for him same thing, he gets up and wanders around, mumbling to himself. He will either crawl into our bed at the foot or go and get in bed with his mom. Several times we found him sleeping in a chair in the living room with the TV on. Or he will turn on the TV in his room and watch it until he falls back to sleep. If we try and talk to him, he is incoherent. But his dreams are always bloody and gorey--classic bipolar. Guest guest
Rose, did you say Kristian drank half a bottle of Risperdal? Didn't that scare you to death? How did it effect him? Is he still on Risperdal? Pat K

Guest guest
Oh my gosh Pat, I was scared to death!! Thought he would stop breathing!!! Just made him sleep for two days. The ironic thing is that he was only taking it for " emergencies " at the time and had had it only three or four times, and didn't like it. I was packing to take it on a weekend getaway, " just in case " and had that and vitamins, etc. on the counter. I DEFINITELY learned a lesson about that last turn on the bottle to assure the safety lock is in place. I still don't feel good about that one today. How's Karac? Guest guest
Oh, Rose, what an ordeal!! I would have been absolutely petrified! Sometimes I accidentally do the dumbest things. The night before Karac went to the hospital he woke up early in the morning, and I was going to give him .5mg's of Clonidine to put him back to sleep and I don't know how I did it, but I gave him 15 mg's of Abilify. That will teach me to put my glasses on before I try to medicate him! smile. They said Karac had a melt down at the hospital yesterday; I don't know what caused that. had planned to bring him home today, but I don't know if she will now or not. I'll know more when I visit him tonight. LOL, Pat K
