Guest guest
Darcy - - - “who thinks she had better stick to kickboxing and strength- training” Don’t give up!!! Step is so much fun…you can learn it!! Please don’t feel discouraged – Cathe’s choreography is HARD! I’m a step instructor and I go to her videos for ideas and inspiration and I struggle to learn portions of her step routine. Someone else responded with a good idea – use her warm up every time you start to work out. That way you’ll really have it down! Also, you’re going to feel good that you’ve mastered at least part of it. Everyone likes to succeed, that’s what keeps us coming back for more. If you feel like you’re failing you’re very likely to quit – it’s just a fact of life. Think of it as a learning experience and keep trying! You can do it – I know you can!!! Also, a good thing to remember about Cathe is that she teaches “tapless” step. So, if you do another video (like, Caribbean Workout, or some Kathy ) the instructor will often “tap down” then go right back to the bench. Cathe does not to that, instead of tapping down, she’ll move to the opposite corner of the bench or switch lead leg. It may seem confusing, but it’s really giving you a better work out. Step instructors who teach tapless like to say “you don’t tap when you walk, do you?” Hope that helps. Good luck with your workouts!! Guest guest
Thank you Dawn and .... This is so my goal this year to be able to do Cathe's step dvds I have. I will keep trying, but I'm just wondering if it takes me this long to learn just one move will it be this hard EVERY new thing or will I get the gist of it eventually and learn faster??? I sure hope so. I do think it would be so much fun,and it would be nice to be able to get a great cardio workout other than kickboxing. Thanks gals!! Guest guest
Dawn, it is especially nice to know that you think it is hard and you are an instructor - whew!! I just wish that she'd go in slow mo sometimes or they would have a part of the dvd that did that. You know what my other dvd player plays in slow motion, I think. Maybe I will workout upstairs next time I give it a try. It will be soon I don't want to forget/lose everything I learned last night!! Very interesting about the tapping! I will have to take note if/when I try a different step workout! Darcy On 1/30/06, Darcy Ledman <exercise.junkie@...> wrote: Thank you Dawn and .... Guest guest
Hi Darcy! Hang in there, the learning curve does get easier - so no, you won't have to take so long to learn each new step workout - the good thing about Cathe is that once you get the hang of her, you'll find that she does repeat some moves and you'll just learn her style. Have you tried any other step workouts besides Cathe? You might do better to learn with a more basic step workout - when I first learned to step I learned with Kathy - I had never heard of Cathe in those days. Some good workouts that are more basic are: Kathy 's Step Workout Gin /Reebok - her newer Simply Step is also good Keli - Ultimate Step Workout Kari also has a new one that is more basic - " Go " that might be a good one to start with, too, although I don't have it. Maybe you can check your library to see if they have some older step workouts for you to practice on.... Hang in there!! Guest guest
I love stepping! but even Cathe's beginner / intermediate videos is heavy on the choreography. You may want to try Kathy 's Step Workout, I really like it because you can go from beginner to intermediate then she has a lower, upper and ab segment followed by a cool down. Good Grief!!! hi darcy - 'low impact step' is cathe's intermediate workout. her 'basic step' is for the beginning stepper, and on that disc is another workout called 'body fusion' which is a weights/step circuit workout, but the step sections are a bit harder than 'basic step'. so once one masters 'basic step' and the steps in 'body fusion', they are to move onto 'low impact step'. :*carolyn. Guest guest
Darcy, Don't feel bad. I've been a certified instructor for 10 years and I can't follow anyone's step workouts. I can't follow most aerobics workouts actually, unless I am really in the mood to focus, and then it takes me forever to get it. Yet, I can teach an awesome class! Go figure! Actually, it is because I'm not a good follower, but a pretty good leader. To get the hang of step, try just practicing the moves on your own, making up your own routines. After a while, you will get the moves and find combos that you really like and you'll have a better time following other peoples choreography. Thats what it took for me to be able to follow other instructors to do videos and classes. Tonya Stepping.. Oh my Gosh, I am HORRIBLE.. I knew I was bad, but why oh why is it so difficult for me???? LOL anyway, the step choreography is basic and keli increases the difficulty with interesting arm movements and a few hops here and there. my notes say that i liked music. there is a relaxation meditation at the end instead of stretching so you might want to add some stretches onto it yourself. i referred to this as a intermediate workout though it must not have been due to the steps... i also have kari anderson's 'GO' and it is quite basic... more so than 'ultimate step' in my opinion. id say its on the same level as gin millers 'simply step', except that gin's workout is 60 mins, while 'GO' is shorter. the easiest of all is gin miller's old 'step reebok' workout which was recently released on dvd. i also recommend kathy smith's 'step workout' for starting out with. :*carolyn.
