I'm very fortunate to live in SoCal. In my garden today, I have four kinds of lettuce and baby spinach ready to harvest. I have two kinds of peas, spring onions, broccoli, cabbage, beets, carrots, turnips all up and happy and I'm looking forward to eating the healthy produce. After the last frost date, I will be planting a lot more. Oh, and I should mention the my Jerusalm Artichokes are ready to harvest. Guest guest
Hi , interesting that anybody should tell you not to eat mushrooms raw, utter bunk!! Bunk that is ONLY IF IT'S COMMERCIALLY/HOME PRODUCED MUSHROOMS. Unless you are expert, eating 'found' fungi is, as we all know, risky. To eat such fungi RAW is asking for trouble! I do suggest, strongly, you consider thefact that mushrooms are produced in well rotted manure, and peel them before you do ANYTHING with them. This is really a message from Doug. Guest guest
Some mushroom grow in manure...most don't... most food bourne illness doen't come from mushrooms... there is a big outbreak right now of food bourne illness... they think it comes from peanut butter... it is of course good to know what you are doing if you are going to mess with mushrooms... I think most people know that... I would want to know from my own research about how to use mushrooms before I messed with them... I wouldn't take some one elses word for it on something so important... I have grown my own mushrooms and eaten them raw... they grew in woodchips and grains... some grow in coffee grinds... others on logs... you can really get into mushrooms.... it is almost like going to college... you need to spend years before you really know what you are doing From: Ernest Willingham <99tomatoes@ gardener .com> Subject: Re: Re: I want to buy some Alfalfa Seeds / mushrooms, fish Date: Friday, January 9, 2009, 10:00 PM I've stopped buying lettuce a long time ago, but I have not stopped growing it. Guest guest
Hello , You are right, up to a point. I feel, that in this instance, is referring to the usual white button mushroom available all over the place. Really, I would refer to all other fungi, capped or not, as fungi, thus avoiding all kinds of horrible misunderstandings. If you know the name of a fungus, it's probable you also know that it's edible before you try it in the kitchen. I personally adore oyster mushrooms, shitake, velvet caps and lions mane. Spot the possible confusion? I believe all of these fungi are growable on all kinds of substrate, indoors or out. I wouldn't expect a shop to offer me enoki for instance as a 'mushroom', I suspect they'd think it was something noxious growing under the floor boards. If you call these goodies, collectively, you cause your 'audience' to have pre-conceived ideas of what they will look like. On first sight, most ppeople will certainly not think of eating lion's mane fungus, it just doesn't look like a 'mushroom'. They're all different, and as such need different culinary treatment. Let's be more specific if there is any chance of ghastly consequences to mistaken identity. (I've waited years to use 'ghastly' in a sensible sentence!). Doug. :~) This is really a message from Doug. Guest guest
You can buy these mushrooms in kit forms online and then you can grow them yourself.. you can take it further and learn to buy plugs and inoculate the proper growing medium.. you can then grow mushroom on hardwood... it is a whole thing as you have to season the logs etc... but then you can have mushroom for a few seasons... it is a hobby and very educational for children... to have them see that not all things are bought in the store or advertised on TV.....you don't have to look for wild mushrooms ...unless you have advanced to that level... here is a good link to buy mushroom kits http://www.bacteriapimp.com/25.html the mushroom kits are at the bottom of the page... they have like 20 different kits at the link From: Ernest Willingham <99tomatoes@ gardener .com> Subject: Re: Re: I want to buy some Alfalfa Seeds / mushrooms, fish Date: Friday, January 9, 2009, 10:00 PM I've stopped buying lettuce a long time ago, but I have not stopped growing it. Guest guest
Properly composted and fumigated manures are considered pureified and classified as food grade.Horse manure and saw dust 50%-50% grows mushrooms really well and the leftover compost is great even though it is a bit HOT.Mushrooms do have some medicinal properties but the button variety is worthless. @...: saxon.1@...: Sat, 10 Jan 2009 19:13:39 +0000Subject: Re: Re: I want to buy some Alfalfa Seeds / mushrooms, fish Hi ,interesting that anybody should tell you not to eat mushrooms raw, utter bunk!!
