Guest guest
Evan went through this but i think his was caused by bathing him everytime he smeared himself. He will get into the bathtub now but does not stay there like he used to. have you tried seeing if he will take a shower with very little water on at first. Evan loved this. when he would not get into the tub. Guest guest
Rose, I can't believe how much Kristian and Karac seem so much alike. The exact same thing happened to Karac. He loved the bath until all of a sudden he wouldn't even get in the tub! I thought maybe his parents had done something to cause it. I didn't make a big to do about it. I just turned on the water without stopping up the drain and gave him the watering bucket to fill up and the next thing I knew he was sitting down in the tub and I was able to close the drain. It seems as though he can handle it better if he gets into the tub before it is filled with water. Aren't these kids interesting? Karac has finally got two friends; it is a kind of long story; I'll tell you about it if you are interested. They have come twice to play with Karac and plan to come for an hour every Monday. I am so excited. Is Kristian taking a bath yet? How about a shower? Pat K

Guest guest
Hey, I've missed a bunch of this discussion due to a bunch of stuff, but my daughter doesn't like baths either. From what she's told me (that I've bveen able to make sense of), this is for two reasons: 1.) she doesn't want to be alone. For some reason the bath tub causes her extreme amounts of fear. and 2.) soaking in the water causes her to " feel funny " , my guess is the slimy soap-in-the-water feeling. She does fine with showers and the door open. Sometimes I can coax her into the tub with a bubble bath shared with her sister, but she still wants to shower afterwards. Also, the soap may be bugging him. I switched to 's Baby Head-to-toe body wash/shampoo and it works great and doesn't sting. Guest guest
Rose: Will he do a shower? Seems I remember a family I advocated for whose son had issues with taking a bath. They had developed such a thorough token system with him and they included his taking a bath every other day into his schedule. He hated it, but did it. I want to say that he didn't sit in the water, but stood up in the tub. Maybe you could have him draw pictures about bathing (get him started with a social story-type picture story about getting ready for a bath, etc.) and maybe you'll get some idea of what's going through his head when it's time to take a bath. Missy Bathing? Hi Guys~~ Kristian has stopped bathing. It appears he's afraid to get into the bath. This was one of the things he's loved over the years (He is 9). Anyone ever encountered this? Guest guest
Oh, Rose, I am so sorry. I know how you feel; Karac started some biting spells too. The only thing that seems to control it is the Zydis and there is such tremendous weight gain with that, and he wants to eat all the time! One of the things that encourages me is that I read from a young autistic girl who said she went through this at this age. She said she didn't want to bite people and would sometimes bite herself to keep from biting others, but she was able to finally get control of it; she was even nonverbal until junior high. Hang on, dear friend. Pat K
Guest guest
Thanks Pat, you're so sweet. Did you read the why of the biting? Just over-stimulation? Probably. Doing ok today. Kristian's enjoying all his gifts and playing with them appropriately, which of course, is a huge feat. He also took a one-legged bath today, lol. One leg in, one leg out. Some of his fear seems to be abating, we'll just take it slowly. Still would love to hear about Karac's new friends. So proud of him. Hope you're having a wonderful Christmas. I'm on break between cooking the soups and deserts.main course coming soon. HoHoHo~~ Rose Re: Bathing? Oh, Rose, I am so sorry. I know how you feel; Karac started some biting spells too. Guest guest
Rose, I'm kinda late jumping in on this thread, been very busy, but we had this problem with about two years ago. He just refused to get in the tub anymore. Part of it was because he didn't like getting any water on his face (still doesn't), so I bought him a scuba mask. It is a big one that covers half his face and keeps him from feeling most of the water spray on him. We also switched to showers so he could control how much water touches him. Another reason he didn't like bathing was that the water was always too cold. He takes showers so hot, I worry he is going to scald himself sometimes, but he never does. As I said, it has been two years, and just this past summer, he started taking full baths again every once in a while(with the scuba mask on). I think swimming classes at school this past winter helped. also was born with a skin disorder/immune type dysfunction which makes his skin super sensitive to everything, so we use a very mild baby shampoo/soap to wash him with. This has the double advantage of rinsing out very easily and quickly should he suddenly decide he's had enough. Bathing him is still not on his " fun things to do " list; he still agrues, runs, and fights me about getting into the shower/tub, but it is getting a little easier...Just hang in there, for this too shall pass.... Guest guest
Yup. Most definitely!!!! My daughter started out with baths...then switched to showers....now is back to baths again. She WILL NOT shower. It may take a bit of deductive reasoning...Has anything changed in the bathroom? Could be ANYTHING! Temperature, decor, soap, etc., etc. . Has he seen/heard something that would make him " fear " the bath? ie; Seeing a cartoon of something going down the drain, seen a spider crawl out of the drain, etc? My daughter WILL NOT shower because one time she was showering she heard air in the pipes...Ever since then it's been bath only. She also is extremely fearful of the me letting the water out. She must be out of the room before I can open the drain. Just some thoughts. Good Luck! Penny Mom to Jacqui, almost 8.... HFA Bathing? Hi Guys~~ Kristian has stopped bathing.
