Water added to Perfumes

Dear Perfumers,

I have become aware that many perfumers, both of naturals and

synthetic commercial products, add water with the alcohol and essence.

Can anyone elaborate on this? I am curious why this is done, what are

the benefits and or disadvantages, and what percentages are common?

Wishing you all a beautiful Moonday,

Hi Roxana,

In perfumery, I believe this practice lessens the potent odor of the alcohol

used, and is especially prevalent in colognes . . . in fact, a lot of the

perfumer's alcohol that is sold is only stronger spirits diluted with water.

In homeopathy, alcohol is diluted 10% for the second stage of succusion and

final dosages. I hope Jeanne Rose will contribute here . . . because I'm

wondering if this wouldn't be the gentler way to extract the lilac flowers.

Be well,

thank you for the input marcia,

i take it there's no challenges with the alcohol and water combining or

creating a strange dynamic? all types of alcohol can be watered down?

hmmm, could you do this with a hydrosal? wow, that could add a whole

new layer to the perfume.
