Guest guest
Hi friends, I'm still relatively new to this group, so I don't know if this type of thread is acceptable. If not, will the moderators please let me know? I promise I won't do it again if it causes problems. My husband and I run a small community newspaper, so we get lots of press releases from bureaucrats. We received one yesterday about a recall of a certain brand of alfalfa sprouts (commercially grown, not seeds, and not organic, as far as I can tell) being sold in stores. The article warned of salmonella contamination, though no illnesses have been reported. After giving the specific brand and lot numbers, and that type of pertinent information, this press release, from the California Department of Public Health, went on to issue a blanket warning against eating ALL sprouts in general. Here's the quote: " CDPH continues to advise consumers about the risk of consuming raw sprouts. Conditions required for sprout growing are ideal for rapid bacterial growth. Sprouts usually are eaten raw, with no additional treatment such as cooking which eliminates bacteria that can cause disease. " I am flabbergasted that, with all the substances out there that the authorities allow to be marketed as " food, " in spite of being not only void of nutrition but actually demonstrably harmful, that they would choose to try to scare people away from eating one of the most nutritious substances on the planet. Is this just an isolated incident, or have some of you all noticed this same strange mindset? And what's behind it? (Or do I want to know?) Do these people really think everything destined for human consumption should be cooked? Are they going to try to force us by law to do this? Do these guys never eat salads? It makes me angry, because I actually have encountered people who are afraid to eat alfalfa sprouts because of some vague fears they can't even articulate. However, most of them will still consume artificial colors, flavors, diet sodas, fast food, genetically modified organisms, etc. Go figure. Sorry for ranting. I just thought I'd find some sympathetic listeners here, and maybe some enlightenment. Thanks! Lorri W.
