Guest guest
Lorri, most of the problems with sprouts in the past has been due to poor or unsanitary handling by growers. Remember, when you grow your own, you control all aspects of the process. Buy a good quality seed - preferably organically grown - and handle as you would anything else that you eat. Your body depends on you to take care of it. Anti-sprout propaganda? Date: Tue, 04 Mar 2008 23:32:21 -0000 Hi friends, I'm still relatively new to this group, so I don't know if this type of thread is acceptable. If not, will the moderators please let me know? I promise I won't do it again if it causes problems. My husband and I run a small community newspaper, so we get lots of press releases from bureaucrats. We received one yesterday about a recall of a certain brand of alfalfa sprouts (commercially grown, not seeds, and not organic, as far as I can tell) being sold in stores. The article warned of salmonella contamination, though no illnesses have been reported. After giving the specific brand and lot numbers, and that type of pertinent information, this press release, from the California Department of Public Health, went on to issue a blanket warning against eating ALL sprouts in general. Here's the quote: " CDPH continues to advise consumers about the risk of consuming raw sprouts. Conditions required for sprout growing are ideal for rapid bacterial growth. Sprouts usually are eaten raw, with no additional treatment such as cooking which eliminates bacteria that can cause disease. " I am flabbergasted that, with all the substances out there that the authorities allow to be marketed as " food, " in spite of being not only void of nutrition but actually demonstrably harmful, that they would choose to try to scare people away from eating one of the most nutritious substances on the planet. Is this just an isolated incident, or have some of you all noticed this same strange mindset? And what's behind it? (Or do I want to know?) Do these people really think everything destined for human consumption should be cooked? Are they going to try to force us by law to do this? Do these guys never eat salads? It makes me angry, because I actually have encountered people who are afraid to eat alfalfa sprouts because of some vague fears they can't even articulate. However, most of them will still consume artificial colors, flavors, diet sodas, fast food, genetically modified organisms, etc. Go figure. Sorry for ranting. I just thought I'd find some sympathetic listeners here, and maybe some enlightenment. Thanks! Lorri W. Just living is not enough. Guest guest
Hi Lorri, As the moderator I will tell you that there was NOTHING wrong with your post. Your amazement of lesser edibles are left alone, or endorsed, is - as we see it - the correct response. We Sproutpeople have long been subjected to this B.S. Instead of writing too much i will send you to some of our pages for further details. I will paraphrase before I post the links though. There has never been a food borne illness blamed on organic seeds. That is the main point. And, since you are growing your own you would find it virtually impossible to produce pathogens in your sprouts. OK - take a look at these pages: http://www..com/Political/outbreak.html http://www..com/safe.html http://www..com/Political/fda.html I know there are too many words. I do tend to rant on this subject, but I'm certain that even a brief look over those pages will make any fear disappear. Happy Sprouting! Guest guest
Hi EW: I had contacted Sproutpeople and they kindly responded to all my questions. I have no more reservations. I love what I'm growing and I feel that I'm doing all I can do to maintain my health. Yesterday, I went to an anniversary party held by my husband's family. We were having a good time. My brother in law who is 72, 5 feet 10, weighs 120 lbs soaking wet, doesn't eat ANYTHING except pasta because he says it's the only thing he can digest. (and I mean he doesn't eat ANYTHING except white stuff, like rice, bread, pasta (maybe once in a while he'll eat some chicken and veggies), but 99% of the time (and I've seen this, he won't touch any food anyplace unless it's a plate of pasta, and it can't have been cooked in any oil, any salt (he doesn't touch any condiments at all). So we are talking at the table and I'm showing him my sprout catalogue and I showed him the sprout tray that I use and the seeds that I sprout. He happened upon the Alfalfa seeds and I knew immediately what was going to come out of his mouth (by the way, he wouldn't go near a computer if his life depended on it, he's completely techo phobic), He reads stuff. So he goes " did you know that there once was a problem with alfalfa? " and before he could utter another word, I said " my dear, that was in 1996, that was commercially grown alfalfa, WHICH HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ORGANIC SEEDS " . AND THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A PROBLEM WITH ORGANIC SEEDS " . He just said " oh!! " Then he said " well, I know that you think you are getting anti-oxidants from eating these things and eating blueberries, but science has proved that anti-oxidants have nothing to do with fighting cancer " . I just stared at him and I said " really? where did you get this information? " and he said " oh, I read reports " . (Remember, he never goes near a computer so what reports he's reading, I have no idea). I said " when I go home, I'm going to go on the internet, and there is the LATEST information on cancer fighting and anti-oxidants, and I'll be sure to look up what you are saying " . So I did. the only article that stated anti-oxidants don't help in cancer fighing has to do with gastrointestinal cancers. THAT WAS THE ONLY ARTICLE. Absolutely everything else I've read supports what we all know. That a healthy lifestyle (which I told him about), and the eating of foods rich in anti-oxidants (especially broccoli sprouts), can fight the cancer that can plague us all. My whole family (on my mom's side), has had some form of cancer. EVERY ONE OF THEM. I told him this. I said " if you think I'm not going to do everything I can do, (in lifestyle, food habits, WHATEVER I NEED TO DO, well, I'm going to do it. I emailed his wife. She always says " he doesn't know what he's talking about, you can't change his eating habits, etc. " I emailed her the proof and told her to Please Inform Your Husband about the mis-information he has been fed. I mean, really. You have a 120 man who eats only white stuff, has an unhealthy appearance (and everyone at the party told us how good we look (especially my husband, who is not a well man), so to me, the proof is in the outcome. Now I'll get off my soap box. lol Melody

Guest guest
I'll be interested to see how this plays out, Melody. My experience has been that people change their minds about what they eat when they are ready to change, and not before. Example: I work with a guy who is sick a lot, and who worries about his weight, his heart, gout, diabetes, etc., etc. Yet, at least at work, subsists on toaster pastries, coffee, bagels with cream cheese, burgers & fries. He says that if he eats veggies or fresh fruit it makes him ill. So I'm trying to be a good example, but I don't actually talk to him about it. I'm fairly certain that the reception would not be favorable. But at least he isn't trying to feed me pastry, so it's all good. melodylubart1 wrote: > > Hi EW: > > I had contacted Sproutpeople and they kindly responded to all my > questions. Guest guest
Melody, Tell your brother about the book " Live Right For Your Type " I think it was this list that someone gave it to me. I have the book from the Library right now and have been following my blood type and my " GUT " feels so much better!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am estactic about how good my stomach feels. My blood type has low digestive juices to begin with which makes it more difficult. There is a website he or his wife can go to http://www.dadamo.com/ He will find that he feels so much better. The reason certain beans were makeing me hurt so bad, I cannot digest them!!!!!!! They are on the " Avoid " list for me. Oh by the way certain sprouts are considered " Beneficial " for my blood type...Alfalfa, Mung, Radish. Wow Again!
Guest guest
Hi. My brother in law is 72 years old and is VERY SET IN HIS WAYS. He only drinks hot water with meals. He takes 4 or 5 gaviscon with every meal. And he takes antacids. He will not change. And I'm even going to try and change him. He is so set in his ways, well, he just is. He's worried about getting diabetes. his sugar reading is 105. It's been 105 for 20 years. He's 72 years old. But because of his stomach problems (he always has the runs), well, he won't eat anything but white stuff. In the past 28 years, we've had talks. But he thinks the way he thinks, and who am I to try and change his mind. I figure it this way. I can lead by example. I look fine, I feel fine, (better since I sprout), my husband who is not well man, feels much better, and looks it. So we lead by example. If a person wants to eat everything white and thinks it's healthy, well, he's not going to listen to me, because he hasn't listened to anyone else. And he won't go near a computer, a dvd player, a vcr, and his wife is lucky that he can change the channel on the tv. So he's extremely tecnically challenged. And I know, that for every thing I tell him that is positive, he'll find something negative to back up his theories. I believe that if we WANT to make positive changes in our lives, that we CAN. He doesn't. Simple as that. lol Melody > > > > Hi EW: > > > > I had contacted Sproutpeople and they kindly responded to all my > > questions. I have no more reservations. Guest guest
Melody - I did get sick on certified organic alfalfa seeds about 2 years ago. I did not report it to the health district, but did return the seeds to Whole Foods. I haven't eaten alfalfa sprouts since. I believe that sprouts are a very important part of a healthy diet. They alkalinize your body and I eat lots of them raw. I have heard that cancer can't grow or has a hard time growing in an alkaline body, it likes acidity (low oxygen) to grow. I know that my candida and dysbiosis is decreasing rapidly as I am alkalinizing my body. Raw sprouts are an important part of that. There is a lot on the internet about raw alfalfa sprouts, and why would so much be there if there wasn't a problem with the alfalfa?? I think we each have to make our own decision about what is right for us. I eat fairly raw meat. I have heard many people tell me about the dangers of raw meat, but I have not had a problem so far. Maybe when I get sick from it, I will stop eating it that way, but so far it has been ok. Your chances of getting sick on organic alfalfa sprouts are probably very limited. Lots of people eat them with no problem. We've had outbreaks of foodborne illnesses in lots of raw natural foods like peppers, lettuce, spinach, apples. We all take chances in life, just living, and we all chose what we are comfortable with based on the information that we have. Eat well, enjoy your food, and alkalinize to stay healthy. I believe it is important. Barb > > Hi EW: > > I had contacted Sproutpeople and they kindly responded to all my > questions.
I have no more reservations. Guest guest
I think you're right Melody, he won't try anything else unless he is ready to if he ever is and nothing you could do would change it. It's not worth the stress :-) Lorri _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of melodylubart1 Sent: Monday, February 16, 2009 8:30 AM Subject: Re: Anti-sprout propaganda?
