Within the next few years surgeons will not be able to perform bariatric

surgery unless they have a multi-disciplinary team that includes a RD.

check out the ASBS site regarding centers of excellence. That in itself

is a great reason.

Getting surgeons to see our

value

Hello BN Dietitians,

I am new to the group and have a question about your successes in

getting surgeons to see the value in promoting you and your private

practice services.

I work in private practice w/ a group of mental health professionals (1

LPC & 2 PhD psychologists) who are wanting to carve a niche to work w/

bariatric patients. I have developed a " Bariatric Wellness Program " w/

MNT and they are asking me to find out how we convince surgeons they

need to promote/require MNT for their patients.

What do I need to know to make this successful in the Plano, Texas area?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Unfortunately, I've seen a lot of program in my area who are COE program and do not include a RD as part of their F/U appointments and the patients are only required to see a RD prior to surgery for the evaulation and not mandatory to see them afterwards. For instance, one the board of directors has his wife (who is a nurse) conduct the nutrition F/U consultations if thier patients have questions and stated that a phone or mail consultation is appropriate for nutrition F/U. In my experience, if you can find some data from a RD showing successful outcomes >2 years then that will help your arguement or promote your services. The truth is that there are some surgeons who value our services and others who do not. I've worked with one who did not and he would recommend the complete opposite nutrition advice (such as No carbohydrates including fruits, low fat milk, whole grains, and only high protein) and all we ended up with was a confused patient and no

respect for my services. Hopefully, the COE will follow guidelines and include mandatory RD for post-op care with regulation. Good luck and the best advice would be to begin with diabetic pateints to achieve better blood sugar control prior to surgery to decrease the rate of complications. I live in Flower Mound, TX and work with most of the bariatric surgeons in DFW and most of them are aware of the need for MNT, although, they don't all utilize it as much as they should. Some have RDs in their practice.
