Has anyone worked with a type 1 who has a lap-band? I would appreciate

any help on this topic. My patient has a pump and she has not had

surgery yet. I'm nervous about managing post-op meals, clear/full

liquids, progression to solid foods, etc. Thanks!

Hi ,

Yes, I have a type I pt on insulin pump who had the lap band. She is

~8wks post-op ... She is very comfortable managing her insulin pump

according to her dietary intake. -- I will need to get her

chart..but maybe this/my pt would be interested in talking with your

pt? I will try to respond back quickly to you re: any further

questions you have - but today is a crazy day!

It's funny that this topic came up; because we just evaluated a new patient who has type 1; her BMI is 38 and she wanted the band. My NP thought she should go with the bypass. My question is; isn't it unusual for type 1's to have a aweight issue? The only thought I had was perhaps she is type 2 but so uncontrolled that she is on insulin? Would she still be classified as a type 1 or type 2? REgardless, I'm glad to hear some band patients who are insulin have done well so far. Let's be sure to keep up on the research, not just our program results.

This particular patient may not do well with the band because she is a huge sweet eater. She does have an endo has tried weight loss in the past. I have not met with her privately yet but will next week so I will get a better feel for her and offer my input. I"m not sure of her oral meds either yet.
