Hyperbaric oxygen, not bariatric

My sister in law has an autistic (and Down's syndrome) child.

She paid ($3000) cash to take the kid 100 miles round trip for a month to

undergo hyperbaric oxygen.

Lots of the websites say that it is all placebo affect but she swears that

the kid:

Made eye contact,

Tried to form words

Had a lot less frequent " hysterics "

The affects lasted for a month but slowly decayed over the next month after

treatment ceased.

I asked a naturopath about it and he said that it somehow affected some

viruses. I tried to pin him down about the mechanism and like a lot of docs,

he was unused to being queried about the steps in his reasoning. (As Mrs.

used to say in algebra class, " Show your work " .)

Anyone know anything about hyperbaric oxygen?

It seems terribly overpriced for the level of technology involved.

$500,000 for a chamber.

Of course it comes with a lawyer in a glass case to break open when an irate

parent sues you for the kid falling down the stairs 3 days after a

treatment.

Stainless steel tank, check; (microbrewery)

pressure guage, check; (microbrewery, pharma mfg.)

Oxygen, check; (welding yard, COPD guys)

Um, pillows? (Bed Bath and Beyond)

CD player? (eBay?)

Ideas?
