Chuck,

I've personally used it for colic. I apply a warm cloth to the infant's belly and massage clockwise, gently. Occasionally pressing the knees to the chest;both alternately and together at times; to further massage the warm cloth into the intestinal region. I reapply the warm cloth several times to make sure the infant is warm and comfortable. I keep a dry blanket handy to cover the child quickly when the towel cools and needs to be removed. I follow up with an upper cervical adjustment. I've seen colic cleared with 1-4 treatments of this nature.

I've also used this on a torticollis case on a 2 1/2 month old infant. The infant had not slept more than 2 hours at a stretch ever! The parents were exhausted, reluctant to bring their child to a DC, but were referred by a good friend who'd brought their infant. The father was very opposed. The baby's head was stuck in left rotation since birth. Had never smiled or been able to turn the head to neutral or to the right without distress and immediate crying and kicking the legs. The child also was constipated more often than not. IT had BM approximately once each 4-5 days. The pediatrician told them to give it time. The mother could only nurse on one breast due to the child's inability to rotate the C-spine. She had to pump the other breast several times daily. After the hot towels were applied to stomach and neck, and an upper C- adjustment; the child smiled a big as could be, turned his head all the way to the right, hearing his mother's voice and the mother started crying. It was only then that I learned that the child had never smiled in it's whole life. When she told me, I started crying! The father teared up. Then the baby filled 2 diapers to overflowing. We kept crying...Ok so maybe we just held our noses.

I always tell parents to bring extra diapers cause it often stimulates BMs in constipated children. It's pretty immediate. In that last case, the father hadn't believed me and had only brought 2 diapers. They had to leave with the baby wrapped in a blanket and still pooping. It was kinda funny.

Insurance denied payment because many companies have policies that don't cover a human until age 13. The parents were happy to pay anyway. That particular child needed 2 treatments. The mom brought him back a week later and he was still 95% better. SO the last appointment was mostly a check-up.

OR DCs,I'd like your take on the use of massage for treating pediatricpatients. Do you or your therapists (CCAs, LMTs) perform massage onkids. If so, how often, what frequency and any particular conditionsthat do well (or not) with massage? Thanks in advance for sharing your experience.C Simpson, DCBeaverton, OR
