Welcome to the group ) Please tell us about your daughter and how your coping please... ((( Welcoming Hugs ))) Helen Hello all, My name is Dori Barton & we live in Kansas City, Missouri. We have 5 children but our 12 y/o daughter is the only one who has AS. Hers is immunization related. I would like to talk to other parents & share stories about these wonderful children who are as special as God could possibly make them. I would like to share stories & am willing to help others in things I have experienced & learned the hard way during our journey to where we are now. My birthday is November 12 & my hobbies are (of course ) anything to do with my children or my husband & a few others but those are the really important ones Thanks for the group! Guest guest
well Helen & everyone else, If you don't like references to God please read no further, *sigh* lets see. I am 30, We have 5 children & only the oldest child is Aspergers syndrome. We don't medicate or treat her ANY differently from our other children in ANYTHING. for the people who think I have already said something wrong I'll expling the way we chose to approach this "disorder". We have never believed that God would ever give us more than we could handle & if we medicate her then it's changing her from the wonderful child that God made special just for us. Changing her from the way He meant for her to be. We also tell her all the time that God can make ANYONE NORMAL but he puts more time & love into the ones that are "special". This has helped her self esteem like you would not believe. lol Our daughter is now the most gentle kindhearted sweet purely innocent child you could ever hope in your lifetime to meet. She refuses to even make fun or say anything bad against the bullys that harass her for being "different" because she doesn't want to hurt thier feelings. pretty mature thinking for someone who's considered "learning disabled". I love how the schools tag our children as "learning disabled" when our daughter makes it a habit to send the teachers back to the dictionaries & textbooks to find out if my daughter is right about what she just said & turns out she IS! lol. Anyway, we seriously believe that ( & heres another reason for non medication) she has to learn to cope with the way she is. If we put hewr on meds then the meds control the way she thinks/acts/behaves... SHE doesn't. & we looked at it as when she's an adult, & she goes out in the REAL WORLD, the real world is not going to make allowances for her "disorder" & she needed to learn how to control herself & deal with the way she is & teach herself how to function in society. Another reason is if she were on meds & then as an adult for some reason could not get her meds she would no longer be capable of dealing with life. We've made sure she understands that its a GOOD thing to be different because if God made everyone to look/act/dress/ the same it would be a very boring world indeed & the people who are DIFFERENT are the ones that make this world go round & are the ones who made the world the way it is. The DIFFERENT ones were the thinkers that came up with the ideas... everone else just followed along:) As to how to cope... time, patience, deep breaths & ALOT OF CALGON!!!!! :-P hehehe Dori angelbear1129@... wrote: Hello Dori, I'm from Ohio, my name is Helen... Guest guest
Oh, that makes it great that daddy knows how to be a horsey ) Hubby here always was on the floor or outside playing with the children... Now that the grandchildren need the same kind of playing its a little harder as we are a bit older ( We still try but it is very hard on the arthritic joints ( Thats neat that you goto the little towns... I take it that you have caught images ) on your pics ) Haven't done that yet, but then we don't have any deserted towns in our area... And I will Not go into a haunted house even during Halloween... I like the Nice Angels, not the ones that Scare me ) Ramble away, It keeps our sanity ) ((( Playing Hugs ))) Helen Helen, Hubby is very proud of the fact that he makes number 6 (childrenwise) but I wouldn't have it any other way. I love the fact that if Daddy gets on his hands & knees to look under the couch for something that he gets jumped by about every kid we have for pony rides/ "roughhouse" (which of course to the kids they're hitting daddy & wrestling with daddy REALLY hard & of COURSE Daddy plays it up :-D & I love the fact that Dad will get down in the floor with the boys & play "hotwheels" with them. It lets the kids know they are special enopugh for us to MAKE timefor. We also like going in the summertime & just going out to little towns hardly noone knows exists & teaching the kids about the history of the town if we can or taking them to things that teach them about history etc. Another thing we stumbled upon that we're going to take back up as soon as the weather gets warmer is to go to places deemed "haunted" & take pics to see what we can find. We wound up with some VERY Interesting pics from a Ft in Sibley Mo. That's how we all became interested in this past-time lol ok enough rambling for now:) Dori One wordfrees us of all the weight and pain of life: That word is,Love!
