Guest guest
Hi Anya, List... Naw.....Grain Alcohol won't make ya go blind if ya drink it... Although ya might *think* so for a minute if ya try a shooter...<G>... The ubiquitous Everclear is grain alcohol.....and it's max proof depends on whichever State the liquor store you buy it in is....if it's available at all.. Here in WI, grain alcohol is max 100 proof.....In Minnesota ya can get 150, and in Iowa there's 190.... Know this don't help, being in Florida...but you might find you have to cross a State line or so.... Curiously enough, in WI, I came across a 190 proof vodka, brand Ambur....but one can't buy the 150 or 190 Everclear (or you can't find 'em at any rate...) The ways of the BATF and their State counterparts are myriad and fascinating... -- W. Bourbonais L'Hermite Aromatique

Thing ya have to remember is that when one adds water back into the mixture, it may turn suddenly turbid....(because you're bringing up the percentage of water in the mixture, and things reassort themselves in the grand atomic dance...) On tincturing.. About two years back I made an expedition to the local co-op here and bought a bunch of raw materials to tincture...vanilla bean, rose petals, cardamom, ooris root, coriander, saffron, allspice....(think it was a post by Baude on that other list you fired up with IDMA back then that convinced me to do this thing)... Been aging the tinctures since.....checking periodically.. Did this with the 95% (190 proof) vodka figuring that whatever I got, I could use it as a note source for scent blending....and I'd get my best extract with the strongest alcohol I had... And that it would mix without any antics with the 190 Proof I use when I fool around with this kind of stuff... The results are all OK more or less....get better as they age..... The vanilla is wonderful..... Occasionally add a drop or two to a mixed drink for an exotic taste... The vanilla bean being the most expensive of the raw materials, I tinctured it twice, and then dumped the residue bean into a small container of sugar, for flavoring purposes.... I suppose one could go out and buy tinctures, etc.... But it's way more fun when one gets to do and create entirely on their own...<G>.. > I'll probably be putting in a Remet order this week, for some grain-based > alcohol, since I don't know what this stuff is I got from the liquor store, > and, two, a gallon from Remet will cost the same as this quart (plus > shipping, of course, but it'll still be way cheaper.) You can use the stuff from the liquor store the same way...it's good old ethanol, *not* denatured, so nothing is added to it.....so ya can drink it even.... -- W. So the folks who have access to the 190 proof stuff are luckier than us Florida folks, because their alcohol has less water. Thanks for clearing that up. > >On tincturing.. >About two years back I made an expedition to the local co-op here and >bought a bunch of raw materials to tincture...vanilla bean, rose petals, >cardamom, ooris root, coriander, saffron, allspice....(think it was a >post by Baude on that other list you fired up with IDMA back then >that convinced me to do this thing)... >Been aging the tinctures since.....checking periodically.. > >Did this with the 95% (190 proof) vodka figuring that whatever I got, I >could use it as a note source for scent blending....and I'd get my best >extract with the strongest alcohol I had... Well, I'm going to be stuck with the 151 proof alcohol for tincturing, but I've tinctured stuff with it in the past, so it should be all right. > >And that it would mix without any antics with the 190 Proof I use when I >fool around with this kind of stuff... > >The results are all OK more or less....get better as they age..... > >The vanilla is wonderful..... > >Occasionally add a drop or two to a mixed drink for an exotic taste... > >The vanilla bean being the most expensive of the raw materials, I >tinctured it twice, and then dumped the residue bean into a small >container of sugar, for flavoring purposes.... > >I suppose one could go out and buy tinctures, etc.... >But it's way more fun when one gets to do and create entirely on their >own...<G>.. Yes, tinctures are wonderful. I have some frankencense resin, some sweetgrass, some great Madagascar vanilla pods and other goodies I'm going to tincture this week. I have some calendula petal tincture I made last year that is wonderful. This week, being a holiday week here in the States, will give me some more time to tincture and blend. Plus, I'm waiting for Roseanne at Sunrose to get her new shipment 'on the shelves' since it passed customs -- lots of goodies coming in from 'across the Pond'. Oh, almost forgot to mention -- some of the freshest, best quality herbs, resins, etc., for tincturing can get found at http://pennherb.com. I've bought from them for almost 30 years (since I was in diapers, you understand :-), visited their store in Philly many times, and have never been disappointed with their products. For instance, they carry asafoetida resin (or powdered). I'm going to tincture some of that in an attempt to get an animalic, musky scent for blending. The name means " Devil's dung " and it is funky. It's a mainstay n Indian cooking, and out of the jar, it smells awful, like rotten onions that a civit cat had a passing acquaintance with, but, blended out, diluted, it adds a rich, unctuous animalistic note that is wonderful. Does anyone else use it? Am I the only one slinging Devil's Dung around? :-) It's a Ferula, like galbanum, a root, like galbanum, but 'on the dark side'. Hmm. a thought. A blend containing asafoetida and galbanum. Just musing on tincturing, folks, just musing. :-) Anya http://member.newsguy.com/~herblady
