Guest guest
Dear Colleagues, I am getting ready to do an eval with a 5 year old. The subjective evaluation indicates a predominance of Filtering difficulties. I am trying to remember from class.... 1. The SMR band should be lower - how low? 2. Does the age also effect the sites or training protocols (bandwidths) to augment or inhibit? Thank you Mark Berman, Psy.D. BCIA-EEG
Guest guest
Mark, Your best chance in determining SMR band is to try electrodes at P4/A2 or O1/A1 and ask the client to close his eyes for a half minute or so, then open them. Watch a power spectrum display, or, in BioExplorer, set up a design with a Dominant Frequency object set to read from 3-12 Hz. Ideally you will see a particular frequency show significant increase with eyes closed and then drop strongly when eyes are opened. That will be his alpha frequency (peak may be around 6Hz at that age), and you can construct an alpha band around that. SMR will be the next higher band. Failing that, start working with a frequency band around 9-12 Hz and slide it down during the session until you find a frequency band that makes him calmer or feel sleepy. All bands will be lower in younger children, and the faster activity is more likely to be posterior and on the right side than in adults because of the way the brain develops. For most 5 year olds, though, I would say working with SMR at Cz and/or C4 is a very good place to start. Also windowed squashing of the frontal lobes (one side at a time), leaving out the alpha and SMR bands (whatever they may be) on the right and the SMR and beta bands on the left, is a good place to start. Guest guest
The windowed squash is a squash of all frequencies that leaves out a window of frequencies. Think of a pasta extruder. You press down on the EEG to quiet it, but you leave out the desirable frequencies, so the energy can slide into those. Yes, I'm working on a revised set of protocols to be released whenever BE 1.0 is released (and the software stops adding new functions). The most time-consuming part is that I am trying to do more documentation of the protocols to go with them. They will, as promised, go out to all who have purchased the protocol package previously, and they'll be available to those who buy them new, though I suspect the price will go up for new purchasers (as it is expected to do for BioExplorer when 1.0 is released). Guest guest
, Did TLC assessment - what I found was T/B ratios EC at about 6, attenuating when EO and further at task to about 4. SMR was about 6, mostly everywhere. Of course, it is good that the Theta goes down during EO and further during task but for a 5 year old, is this still very high? Also, the SMR, is low but how low relatively speaking due to age? Any thoughts? Guest guest
Mark, We've been working up some new workshops, so the schedule has been a little unsettled. The one that we will probably try to offer at each of our upcoming programs in 2005 is the Training Planning Update. This will be a two-day workshop open only to those who have completed the Trainer's Practicum. Those of you who have done the practicum in the past 18 months know that I've been working on a revised assessment form that uses an Analyze page to replace the seriously outdated " protocols " page. I have that and have been using it for a while, and I now pretty much use that page as my main place for training plans, using the others to drill down for more detailed info as required. The TPU will provide an overview of how to read that page and use it as well as an update on the protocols we are now using more. So far, if your experiences are anything like mine, I believe you will find this new approach is a faster and more effective next generation, especially for those using BioExplorer for assessments and training. Another workshop in which a number of clinicians have expressed interest is the Trainers Practicum Protocols workshop we debuted in Zurich this fall. It is a four-day hands-on practice not of reading assessments but of running training sessions. Each participant brings his/her own training plan (ideally submitted to me in advance so we have one I have had a chance to revise). During each of the four days, each person performs a session as trainer and as client in both the morning and the afternoon based on their training plan. We de-brief after each segment and review the reactions the " clients " had, questions the " trainers " had and provide feedback directly to the trainer. Some of the sessions are shared by all (e.g. in one session every client performs an Alpha/Theta session), while others are individualized. The experience of the 10 pros who went through the workshop in Zurich was remarkable: I think it's fair to say that everyone left with a clear commitment to (and direction for) his/her own training. Equally important, everyone had a chance to get or listen in on clear feedback from another professional on what did and did not work in their coaching style(s). I'm also doing a 2-day workshop on the BrainPrime program, my program for adults 45 and up, who want to push the brain back toward its prime. This is a day's review of the research on aging and the brain, how immutable it is, followed by a detailed presentation of the BrainPrime program I used in Atlanta with older adults (generally one-size-fits-all). That program is presented not only in terms of the clinical design but also how we marketed and charged for it. The workshop also includes hands-on practice using the specific training protocols involved. Hopefully these will be listed on the site (http://www..com) very soon. In the meantime, I'd ask anyone who has any questions or suggestions or comments about these to pass them on via the list. Those who are interested in attending any of these, please contact Foxx (foxx@...) or me (pvdadp@...). She or I can get you on the list of interested participants and try to get these workshops set up. I will be at FutureHealth this year, doing a plenary presentation on the changes in price and quality of technology, a presentation on assessment in the Foundations of Neurofeedback course and a 4-hour overview workshop on BioExplorer. As always, I'm available for anyone who is interested in individual or small group work if it can be scheduled during the conference, and I plan to do some workshops following it. Southern and/or Central California, Seattle and Alaska are optional sites we have folks working on. Guest guest
Hi Pete, You caught my attention about the TPU. I hope you plan on presenting this somewhere in the East, like VA, MD in 2005.
