Guest guest
Hi Jackie, One of the things that was particularly difficult for us was when Kelsey was having erasing compulsions in school. She would get tummy aches from the stress of erasing while getting behind on spelling tests, worksheets etc. When I suggested to her teacher that she might need extra breaks and less work, her response was: " You want me to *not* hold her responsible for getting her work completed? " I should stress that this was a wonderful teacher, who simply didn't understand OCD. At that point, we were making good progress w/CBT so I didn't pursue in-class accomodations. I think teachers need to be able to make the fine distinction, by working closely with parents, on where kids are with treatment of their OCD. If they're at the beginning of the road and are overwhelmed and anxious, the teacher should be looking to find good accomodations to keep them in school and anxiety under control. As they make progress in treatment, the teacher should work with parents to identify opportunities to remove supports and help them " boss back. " Hope this is helpful, in San Diego
