Guest guest
I have never thought about my food - not where it was grown, or how it was grown, or how it was harvested, or how it was stored, or what 'treatments' it might have received, or how it was processed. There is a currently a hoopla about the almonds because now we are aware that they are dead. We are aware of how they are 'treated' after harvest. But what of the other 'seeds' on our grocery shelves? What has been done to them? And the 'fresh' produce what has been done to them? I read somewhere that some dry beans on grocery shelves are treated to inhibit sprouting. There is so much I haven't bothered to find out, there is so much I haven't bothered to question. It is similar to the rodeos and circuses I grew up with, it that I never questioned the morality of them for myself. Nor did I ever question the beliefs our country was build on. I never questioned what I wanted and what I might think for myself, I was just existing and no thoughts were ever formed, no questions ever asked. This almond issue for me is actually a good thing. Yes, new to sprouting I am disappointed. I would have liked to have seen a root on my almonds and I would have like to have grown a seedling tree. How many of the almonds on the market were ever alive to begin with anyway? How many people who sprouted almonds actually received a live sprout and not just a water swollen one that was already in existance thinking it had 'grown'. This almond killing has brought to my attention that I want to know about farming practices and the fact manure spread on fields transfers its bacteria to the seeds of the plants; I want to know how seeds are stored and the fact poppy seeds are so volatile that special procedures have to be taken when storing and shipping; I want to know that my apples and my tomatoes are stored for months in rooms full of gas. I want to know that commercial bean sprouts are grown in gas. I want to know. I no longer feel content to just eat whatever, from whereever, grown by whomever however they choose, treated by whatever methods they choose or that our 'protective' (Ha!) government chooses to dictate to them. Example: I am buying organic seeds and yet I don't even how what the means. Some label put on according to some rules that I haven't even bothered to research. Just living life thinking that other people are taking care of the world and taking care of my needs and make laws to protect me and my interests. Geez talk about living in the dark, and willingly. BUT: My mind was a little seed lying dormant which has now begun to sprout and the leaves are reaching out seeking the light of knowledge. Thank you for being a part of that, that you for listening, thank you for sharing your knowledge. -Lee
