Some one on this sight mentioned that all bamboo baskets from China are

now fumigated. I have not researched it but maybe someone here has more

info. Diane

I have read where spraying vinegar on a surface and then spraying peroxide on

the same surface is more efficient (and safer) than using bleach. I wonder if

that process would be as good as fumigating.

Jerri, I was told that the reason for no bamboo was because they were

deemed unsafe for food and are no longer permitted to be imported,

however there are steam cooking bamboo baskets in Asia stores. These

might work. I found my strainer in an Asia market where I shop for

organical grown produce.

Unsafe for foods?

How are those steam cooking baskets safe and how do you know they are not

fumigated?

Don't know that they are not fumigated, but I my wife teaches in a school that

has a large Asian population and they are used a lot. Also used at a local Dim

Sum restaurant. I will ask some questions and get back to you.

To tell the truth, I don't know. When I started to talk in garden clubs

about sprouting, I wanted to get a couple of baskets for show and tell. I

could not find any. I went to Sproutman's website to find out where he

got his and was informed that they are no longer available because they

were unsafe for food. But I do know that the kind that you see in some

Asian restaurants are available in markets that sell Asian Food. A

market here in my neighborhood has them, but they have flat bottoms and

large holes. I think that is because they go in a steamer and need to

allow for the steam to pass through. You could probably put a paper

towel in it and go ahead and sprout.

I have several bamboo baskets that I purchased from the Sprout House several

years ago. To be honest, it was a pain because of the plastic green house I had

to put them in for humidity. I think I actually got the last of all of

them(baskets and green houses) from her. I only used one and as my usual

habits are to buy too many of anything, I have 9 of them sitting here not being

used and only one that was ever used at all! If anyone wants them let me know! I

use the Easy Sprout almost exclusively now. It is so much easier!
