Guest guest
There are multiple brands of USB to Serial adaptors. The ones I know that work best with BMR are the Keyspan adaptors. IOGear has worked for several people I know too, You have to make sure you do get one of the adaptors that is made to connect a Palm Pilot, printer or other type of peripheral to your laptop as they do not handle data well enough. Most adaptors have configuration software that allows you to specify which com port will be assigned to the adaptor. You if you set it for the first available com port, you should be able to select that in the software. Many times the adaptors do not assign themselves to the next available com port, resulting in the software being unable to detect the BMr GEorge On Jul 24, 2004, at 1:01 PM, m_modular wrote: > i bought a new laptop that has no serial port, so i got a USB to > serial adapter for it. i can't get the brainmaster to output > correctly, though -- it only detects COM1 but of course it can't read > from there. can someone tell me what i'm doing wrong or lmk the > correct procedure for using the BM with a USB adapter? > > appreciate > > > > > >
Guest guest
thanks, i think these manufacturer drivers are buggy with XP. i might try the quatech pcmcia adapter instead (/message/6219). it looks like it might have better data throughput and accuracy than usb, also. appreciate > There are multiple brands of USB to Serial adaptors. Guest guest
I have seen the keyspan and IOGear work well with XP The PCMCIA adaptor is also a good idea in that it gives you a true serial port. Guest guest
When I saw all of the problems being reported with USB adapters, I opted for a PCMCIA card and never had a problem. Although setting up the serial port numbers was a bit of a challenge. Guest guest
You have to make sure you install a driver for the adaptor. Then, if you check in the Control panel, the Systems area, under Hardware/Device Manager, you'll see a section for Ports. Look there and you'll find the USB adaptor listed, and it should tell you the COM port that has been assigned. Pete Van DeusenBrainTrainer ()16246 SW 92nd Ave, Miami, FL 33157305/321-1595 brainmaster with laptop USB i bought a new laptop that has no serial port, so i got a USB toserial adapter for it. i can't get the brainmaster to outputcorrectly, though -- it only detects COM1 but of course it can't readfrom there. can someone tell me what i'm doing wrong or lmk thecorrect procedure for using the BM with a USB adapter? appreciate

Guest guest
n/m - i freed up some resources and got it to work under com2. thx to all who recommended the quatech. > i just got the SSP-100 from superlogics.com, and it's a nice little > device. i feel a lot better about using it than the usb > adapter. i can't get it assigned to anything but com7, though -- could > you share your technique for configuring it? > > thanks
Guest guest
I have a Socket Serial I/O pc card (the kind with attached serial 9-pt male plug; that plugs into a Radio Shack 9-female to 25-male adapter that in turn plugs into the Thought Tech Pro-SB interface. So far, perfect reliability on my Toshiba Satellite laptop with XP Home. Ordered it from www.socket.com Weiner wrote: > I have seen the keyspan and IOGear work well with XP > > The PCMCIA adaptor is also a good idea in that it gives you a true > serial port. > > > On Jul 24, 2004, at 2:32 PM, m_modular wrote: > > > thanks, i think these manufacturer drivers are buggy with XP. i might > > try the quatech pcmcia adapter instead > > (/message/6219). > </message/6219%29.> it > > looks like it might have better data throughput and accuracy than usb, > > also. > > > > appreciate > > > > > >> There are multiple brands of USB to Serial adaptors.
