Guest guest
Ask how much fluids they are drinking. I've noticed the patients that are constipated are drinking less than 64 ounces of fluids per day. In the begining, it is especially challenging for them to get all the fluid in, but in my experience, increasing fluid helps with their constipation. Hope that helps. : ) Beth constipation postop What is everyone recommending for constipation in the first 8 weeks postop?Shirley R. , RD, MS, CDRegistered DietitianDean East Clinic, 1821 S. Guest guest
Most of the time they are not really constipated. There is just not enough residue to create a stool. I find it real common for pts to have bowel movements every 3-4 days at the beginning. Some time a few swigs of undiluted apple jucie or apple sauce will trigger some mild dumping. They may take stool softners such as colace. NO laxatives. Plenty of water and walking. Guest guest
The fluid intake is the first thing I check. I have had a few patients though that complain of constipation even when fluid is adequate. Shirley R. , RD, MS, CD Registered Dietitian Dean East Clinic, 1821 S.
