Hi Ellen,

I'm glad to hear you had a relaxing few days to yourself in Chicago after the

conference and that seems to have recovered from her fever.

has the spitting thing too. With him, it is related to contamination.

Sometimes it can be from another person who sneezes etc. and then he has to

spit and other times it can be from verbal contamination from

something...something someone has said. I thought of that when you told me

about what does.

The anxiety is spiking here as well, with school just a few weeks away.

has been nasty (out of character for him) and very impatient and seems

to be stressed out all the time. He won't even talk about the coming school

year so I know these are " red flags " for us. I called Dr. F so that we could

schedule some more time with her to address these issues and start preparing

him for his increased schedule this year.

It was really nice meeting you at the conference. You were very strong and

brave to stay after you got the call that had such a high fever. I

would have been a wreck. I hope the new school works out...it sounds ideal

with such a small class size and the teachers so far sound good.

Take care,

Noelle

Spitting can be a compulsion or a tic. My daughter (6) began doing this--in

her usual overnight fashion--around the time she began having tics, about a

year ago, six months after her OCD onset. She did this when her anxiety

spiked from being frustrated or thwarted from doing a compulsion (usually

unwitting on our part.) It disappeared when she began taking Risperdol

along with her ssri, which hints that it was a tic, according to her doc.

She still spits (not at others, not in anger, frustration) when she thinks

of or sees something yucky, this is a compulsion I think.

>Ellen,

Forgive me for laughing, but you hit home with the sensory part of

Aspergers....I live that too, my son was first dxed ADHD then AS, which fit

him well for several years, then PDD-NOS....we have had spitting (the

younger one is doing that now....spits on the floor, drinks water from the

faucet while doing his floor flooding thing and then spits huge amounts of

water all over the sink. Both boys have been caught (after escape

naturally) running down the road naked, in underwear, pulling down

above....and they go out on the front porch and

pee....AARRGGHH.....whatever is close....so I think you see why I had to

crack up a bit....is it possible to put a privacy fence around your

yard....I have tried everything I can think of and have come to the

conclusion this is the only answer short of chaining them up inside the

house (which won't stop the spitting!!)...if you get better answers PLEASE

forward to another frantic mom....Dee in Va.

Ellen- In Ct you can not legally leave a child alone till age 12...but not all 12 year olds are ready--I babysat as a kid at 10 during the day..11 at night. I never leave my 12 year old alone due to her CP....but she has a friend who sits for others. They wanted to stay alone while I ran to the store the other day...but I think we need to talk about getting her out in an emergancy first etc.before I would do that. mY 10 year old (oops almost 11 in 2 weeks ) with OCD thinks they should be able to stay alone...but incase of fire or anything he would freak & abandon her......so we just don't go there.

I think with all the issues your daughter is dealing with yoy toowill have to wait a little longer till you leave her---- joy

Still no OCD symptoms, she spit at her father all week while I was away, but

no spitting at me yesterday. This morning I started lecturing her about

playing with the dog, I went on a little too long (I do that) and she got me

right in the eye. This can't be a tic or an obsession, can it? Obsessed

with not being told what to do, and compulsion to spit?

Just went out for an hour (yes, to have my nails done) came back, she is

sitting in the back yard naked. We just had this whole conversation on rape

before I left, and while I was in Chicago, her Dad put her on the phone and I

explained why she couldn't be in the back yard without clothes. This is not

an OCD thing, probably more a sensory one, she knows this, has been told over

and over that she cant go outside without clothes, I asked her what she was

thinking, and she said she wasn't.

I think this is the Aspergers piece, but I still need suggestions. I need to

be able to leave a 12 year old alone for an hour, don't I? Without always

coming back to a disaster?

Thanks all,

Ellen/NY

It feels better just getting that out of my system.

Be glad you are allowed to bring a parent advocate in NY--a court in

Delaware just ruled that parent advocates are inadmissable, although you

are free to bring a lawyer!

Pete called it to my attention originally. I may have a couple

details wrong (like what State it occurred in), but that was the gist of

it.
