Guest guest
Reading the articles about IRRADIATION of our food groups, that everyone has contributed on the Sprout People forum, I have been investigating how wide spread this practice is used. Upon inquiring about how many foods that we consume that maybe or are IRRADIATED, I was shocked to find that all foods that cross our Borders, that go through Customs (I Live in Ontario Canada) are irradiated. At this point in time, I have learned that only locally grown foods have not been exposed to the IRRADIATION Process. I also learned from our local Health Food Store Owner, that just because a food is categorized as Organic, it does not exclude protection from the irradiation process. It only guarantees that the growth process followed specified regulations that categorize the foods as Organic. There are no regulations on what happens to the foods to prepare them for shipping or handling, after the growth process has passed inspection. I learned that almost all raw foods are sprayed with insecticides in storage to prevent degradation from insects. I look for further inputs, as this information that I have just recently learned is just word of mouth. The owner of the health food store did phone two suppliers ( Port Royal Mills and Ontario Food Co-Op Buyers Group) to gain this information following my request for a follow-up. Thank You - from Ontario Canada
Guest guest
, you certainly put a lot of effort into this and I thank you so much. We are all being lied to about so many things...and if not lies, then deception. I think we have all been ASSUMING too much because thats what we would like to believe. What a rude awakening. Again, thank you for all your time involved in finding this out! I guess we can all see now how important it is to transform our small yards...or even a window box with some healthy vegetables that we grow on our own. There is always room for a window box of mesculun greens and a space on a patio for a trellis tomato, green beans, or squash. I would be careful and NOT use reclaimed water in the yard or on my vegetables!! And if we have cooperative neighbors of the same mind set, maybe they could grow the eggplant and yams and trade. Also, we can certainly appreciate even more what we can learn from each other here as far as our sprouting successes. Real food is becoming scarce, folks. davidwhittaker <davidwhittaker@...> wrote: Reading the articles about IRRADIATION of our food groups, that everyone has contributed on the Sprout People forum, I have been investigating how wide spread this practice is used. Guest guest
Yes, I agree. I have been giving this much thought lately, wondering how much food I buy at a health food store or food co-op is really as good as I think it is. How do we know if a food has been irradiated or not? I just tested some whole grain barley that we bought in 2002 for germination and it DID NOT germinate. What am I to think? Seems that at least 1 or 2 seeds out of 10 should have had life in them. We am very blessed in that we have 6 acres of tillable soil and my DH and I do raise a big garden every year. We do indeed eat good for about 4 months out of the year, but what about the rest of the year. I had a 14 cu. ft. freezer full of good food that hurricane Katrina took. Guest guest
Lots of folks in NY buy from local farmers' markets. We'll just have to assume that _all_ commecial food is irradiated. Reminds me of the " after the nuke war " SF stories; shambling, mutated survivors digging for scraps of radioactive food. ===================== From: Gail Scarbrough <glsh47@...> Date: Tue Dec 20 18:59:29 CST 2005 Subject: Re: More questions regarding IRRADIATION Yes, I agree. Guest guest
Righty oh! I am off to my vegetable patch then because it is all very worrying. In this case it may be more healthful to consume local raw foods than organic, hmmmmm.
