Guest guest
Pete Could you give any kind of appraisal of the Pocket Neurobics system? I am thinking about something new to give me a backup system. Would this work do you think for day in day out use? Two feet seems awfully short. Is that between the unit and the computer? How well does the IR work, if you have any direct experience with it? Can that version actually run a play station? Like a joystick? Can that be? I'd be grateful for any personal notes you could add. There are currently 2 available options for the Abhayamudra: The Pocket 1 ir (the infrared version that has been available for some time as the A1) The Pocket 1 w (the new wireless version). There does not appear to be any way to upgrade from the ir to the w, since the guts are quite different. The Pocket 1w comes with a USB dongle which picks up the wireless transmissions from the unit and no longer requires the USB-serial adaptor. The Pocket 1ir has a range of about 2 feet (you can judge for yourself how practically correct that is) The Pocket 1w, which operates at 2.4 gigahertz, has a stated range of 15 feet. The Pocket 1ir is the only one which has the option of driving a PlayStation or X-box. There are Home and Office packages available for both units. The Home package includes the HEG headband and the electrode set. The Office package includes the HEG headband and the electrode adaptor which can be used with any standard EEG electrodes. The list price for the Pocket 1ir is still $845, or $1385 with the Home package or $1,410 with the Office package. The list prices for the Pocket 1w are $100 higher at each level. Note that the base price no longer includes any electrodes or means of connecting, so the adaptor would have to be purchased separately if you wanted a package. Of course anyone who is on the BrainTrainer list can purchase these units through me at a discount, as you could purchase BrainMaster or WaveRider equipment. Is it available and what does it cost? Will it be possible to simply upgrade or do I need to purchase a new unit? Thanks, Rich
Guest guest
, Getting past an astonishingly bad manual, the system has lots going for it. I would definitely get the Pocket 1w wireless unit for its greater range and ability to work directly with the USB port. The ir version has a range of 2 feet nominally, though I usually keep mine about 4-6 inches from the ir sender on the unit to the ir receiver which plugs into a cable that plugs into the com port on the back of the computer. Hasn't been a problem, but others have had problems with interference and signal dropping. The PlayStation issue is something that is on paper, but I've never seen it actually work. Kind of like the DVD player on BE. Sounds great, and sometimes it works well also, but it's rarely what you expected it to be. I sure wouldn't buy it for that. The unit is very good for HEG (freestanding or with the computer), and when it is set up properly, it is fine for gathering EEG data in one or two channels and getting it to the computer to drive BE. Guest guest
Pete THanks for that appraisal. Tell me how you use Hershel's HEG? Do you use it, is I guess the first question? I have Jeff Carmen's Pir HEG and it works fine but doesn't allow a connection to a computer. I've tried to agitate for a connection to BE but it is not on a front burner with anybody. In your note you say: " and when it is set up properly, it is fine for gathering EEG data... " does that have an ominous ring? Do you mean that it is finicky and hard to integrate with a computer program like BE? That is what I would use it for. How hard is to set up properly? Guest guest
, You put the headband on, like a sweatband, with the target dot over the area you want to train. I usually work at Fp1, Fpz and Fp2, but sometimes at F7, Fp1 and Fpz and occasionally other areas. Using the A1 (I don't have the BrainMaster version, so I can't speak for that), you can do 8-10 minutes at one site, producing a real effort to push up activation, then take a break and move the target over a second area, then train there for 8-10 minutes and repeat at a third site. You can use it freestanding, or you can use it sending the data to the computer. The unit is relatively easy to use once you have it programmed if you want to do HEG and send EEG to BioExplorer. I just set up two presets, one for HEG on the unit itself and one for 2 channels of EEG being sent to the computer. Then it's a piece of cake. However, there are more than a few places you could miss something important in the set up if you didn't know what you were doing--or were trying to figure it out from the manual.
