I've been having a super-fast trace. I'm convinced it's the new coconut oil I got from Soapers Choice. It's the 76 degree one. Of course in the most giant bucket you can imagine. Everything else is the same - the olive oil (tried both my kitchen one and the pomace one), the palm oil (getting old, though...), my lye is getting a bit old (can this be it? Someone say yes!!), and I used the same distilled water I've always used. Any thoughts on this? It's depressing me. The trace is about 60 seconds (I'm not kidding, I'm listening to music and I don't even make it through 1 song...) and then I have very thick pudding. I want to do swirls but I can't because I have pudding! And of course all this is before any EO or coloring (who has time for that?)! Guest guest Posted August 4, 2011 Report Share Posted August 4, 2011 I got coconut oil from them last year and as far as I know of i didn't have any problems. but then that was last year not this year. how are your indoor temps?? it is a bit warm out this year which may make a wee bit of a differance not much though... I always check my soap recipes against the sage calculator which gives a range for the amount of liquid to add. If I want a faster trace or cure time I use the low end of the liquid and if I want time to work the soap I use the full amount suggested and sometimes a little extra depending on the eo I use. Also the sage gives you the amount of liquid to use by volume and not by weight. Unless the lye is clumping up, it should be fine. You could call Soapers Choice and ask Mike if there's something different about this oil or if others are reporting the same problem. Guest guest Posted August 5, 2011 Report Share Posted August 5, 2011 Yes, it's so weird because I've used this recipe before, and used it in the winter, too, with drier air and ambient room temp (my house being at like 60 because I'm so cheap...) when it first happened in the winter I was like, ok, maybe it's a one-time thing, but now it's happened like every time since, and it's the only thing that's changed. I'll try doing what sugessted - cooling the oils to room temp - I was using 100 for both the oils and lye - could this be a prob? I'll do anything to make this easier to work with! I'm using the water amt listed in the recipie - but did someone say to add a little more, maybe? And I'm definitely calling Mike on Monday, thanks, Beth, for the push - I get so shy and unconfident but we at the beer factory like to hear from customers (we can't fix it if we don't know!) so maybe the oil man will feel the same way. My next move is to use a recipie that uses only a tiny bit of coconut oil, see what that does. Or close, anyway, seeing that it's usually just above freezing. LOL 100 degrees shouldn't be a problem, but it's the first thing I'd change if it were me. Have cold water ready, and if it begins to seize, then you can add the oil and stir quickly. I've heard that Mike likes to talk to customers, and the times I've talked to him he was very personable and helpful. I know what you mean, though, I don't like calling when I can avoid it. It thinned it up enough so I could get it into the mold - still pudding-like, but I shook it around enough and even managed to do a swirl with another color! I posted it up on FB I was so excited! (I'm still calling Mike on Monday, lol...even though I'm saving mega-time with this short trace!!) So here's the recipe I've been using - lemme know if you see anything strange: 14oz water 6oz lye 12oz coconut oil (!!!) 8oz palm oil 20oz olive oil Mix at 100 deg. I cooled everything below to room temp for this batch and it still misbehaved! My scale is a-ok - my palm oil is getting old, could this be it, maybe, too? It can save you failed batches and ensure " safe soap. " :-) It's possible that the higher lye can cause quick trace. Anybody know that for sure? I should start a campaign for safe soap.
