Hello, Anyone have experience with vitamin A deficiency? The

patient was taking routine chewable vitamins---her surgeon now has

her using spray vitamins (8 sprays per day) which is very difficult

to continue. She did receive 2 doses of Viatmin A injections after

the diagnosis. Any thoughts? Gerri French, MS, RD, CDE

Aquasol A or other dry tablet would probably be absorbed better than

an oil based capsule. I'm not sure of actual doses available in the

various forms. With such high doses required, maybe 25000IU x 4

doses daily would make a person more compliant even if it was not

the best absorbed. And that would be something to consider.

Ideally the best source should be predominantly retinol because it

is more efficiently absorbed than beta carotene. One molecule beta

carotene only 1/6 as effective source of Vit A as retinol.

(Harpers Review of Biochemistry).

What is the source of your zinc information? I haven't heard that,

but would be interested in knowing more.

Actually, I was hoping someone here had a reliable source. All I've

got is an article from the Food and Nutrition Bulletin, vol. 25, no. 1

(supplement 2) © 2004, The United Nations University: Developing Zinc

Intervention Programs. I was hoping for something directed

specifically to RNY pts. for my files.
