If you're having so much difficulty getting sprouts to appear, I would begin with a whole new batch of seeds/beans/grains. Too often, we buy stuff to sprout that has been treated or is otherwise useless. Check with your heaalth food store for untreated organic seeds etc for sprouting, or buy online from Sproutpeople. Next, try soaking in tepid water (90 to 115 degrees at outset). This gives your seeds a head start. The mason jar should work, if everything else is in order. Just be sure to tilt it almost to vertical for good drainage. The flannel or cloth method is not preferred because it is so susceptible to mold and rot. Sprouting is really easy, so don't get discouraged. As to the gravy, Sift the flour you are going to use, and stir with a whisk as it simmers. I bought these huge packets of seeds of broccoli, alfalfa and others, but in 1999. LOL ok ok..I'll toss 'em and see if I can find others. Thanks. What about growing them in dirt? Wheat, esp. hard red winter and spring wheat berries, will last the longest if stored correctly...which means in sealed bug-proof jars or cans. It's definitely best to buy smaller quantities at a time and keep everything fresh (less than 6 months old, in your stock). Also, as I mentioned before, it pays to buy certified organic from a good seed supplier. As for growing *on* (not 'in') dirt, this is an excellent way to sprout certain seeds...but not others. It is best for growing taller, upright sprouts to use as greens. I strongly suggest you get hold of a book titled " The Sprout Garden " by Mark Braunstein. He tells you all about the various sprouting methods and which are best for what. Another great addition to your sprouting equipment is the EasySprouter from Sproutamo. This is truly a way cool device, and will save you many disappointments. Now, finally, about the lump-free gravy: Start out by making a roux. Melt butter or other fat source (pan drippings, etc) in a saucepan. Pre-heat the liquid you're planning to use (milk, broth, wine, etc) and have it ready. Next, get yourself the one and only specific tool for making sauces/gravies; this is a handle with what looks like a flat-ended spring at one end. You stir with this, and you demolish any and all lumps. OK, next stir in the amount of flour or thickener you are using, stirring with the special gadget I just described. The flour will bubble and form a thick paste; let this cook for a few minutes before stirring in the pre-warmed liquid. Do you know they were SO hard to find when whisks came out? Now they are back. Those are the greatest. We have been laid off for 8.5 months now, so can't go buy seeds yet. But maybe I will try again with another packet of seeds. I will make that my life's mission for the next three days. lol I will use a cookie sheet or something flat and shallow and see what happens.
