I'm a new Vitamix user. I've had my Vitamix for about three weeks and it's seen

almost daily use. I had a big batch of spinach that I couldn't use and just

washed and froze the leftovers. I just found this video and might try this with

my next batch.

Watch the video to end, as she includes her " outtakes " .

That's a great idea! I wonder if you could use less water when using the

Vitamix. Anybody know?

Thanks,

Loren

I don't see why not but if you find out that you cannot pour it very easily then add a little water. I just put my leafy greens in a sandwich zip lock bag squeeze out the air and freeze them and when I want to make a green smoothie I just pull out a bag and add it to my Vitamix. I do the same as Tom. Or just buy the prewashed and put the whole bag in there, the baby spinach. I have 6 bags frozen in there now. It's so easy to just break off what I need and put it in the VM. This way I'm not diluting it with water and always have some in hand. I wash my cabbage and freeze it in ziplock bags as well. So far, it works well. Since I make smoothies for the entire family, even extended, they bring me the spinach, fruits and other greens. It saves me on my grocery bill and it only takes minutes for me to mix theirs and freeze them in ice cube trays and transfer to bags for them to come once weekly and pick them up. The only big thing I learned is freezing chia seeds premixed in the smoothies, makes them slimy when they are reblended or thawed. So I always send a bag of chia seeds with them to mix after they've thawed them out. They aren't getting all the nutrients as we do drinking them fresh, but it's a start until they can afford their own and I love doing it for them. Everyone who participates has lost a minimum of 15 pounds so far and a few have went into the 20lb weight loss category. They are so funny, they will call and let me know when they are running low because they are what they call "addicted" lol. Always in my thoughts and hope this helps some, Sent from my iPhoneOn Jul 8, 2012, at 12:43 PM, "Tom Matuschak" <pmatus@...> wrote:

Tom,

You're right, it probably is just an extra step. I froze my leftover spinach

the same way you did. I just thought the green " ice cubes " were cute. It

probably would be good to do the spinach cubes if you use mostly fresh and not

frozen fruit in smoothies. It might be hard to judge just how much spinach is

in the frozen cubes though.

Again there is nothing wrong with this method. If proportion control is a priority I would suggest you take 2 cups of greens and add 1/2 cup of water and see how many cubes that fills. The video says to add 8 cups of greens and 2 cups of water (4 to 1) so I just reduced those amounts to make is simple. I can see the pros both ways. No cons. But if somoene has limited space in the

freezer or as I have been reading(cramming)or rushed because of a busy life and

likes to make up bags ahead of time I can see the cubes would be great.

I have been eating out of the freezer and pantry for months trying to get rid of

what I have. Years ago I was eating vegetarian. Not raw but a strict veggie

diet. Legumes, nuts, corn and dairy for protein type thing. I KNOW I lost weight

and felt the best I had in years. In fact I felt too good, and managed to hurt

my back doing work too heavy for my bones and years. Then a bad operation did a

lot more damage.

The upshot is I haven't been without pain or able to stand up straight in years.

More and more I am having to use a walker. I refuse to dose myself up with even

legal drugs and become an addict. In my mind if you blindly take pills instead

of responsibility you are an addict just the same as if you bought them from

your neighborhood pusher.

I am 76 years old and the last few years I have sat in a chair playing with

geezer toys and turned into a sick fat old woman. But I KNOW I can get better.

Dig my real self out from under all this fat.

Getting some of this weight off is the most important first step. I KNOW how

good I felt before and I have been working toward that again. I like veggies and

fruits much much better than the flesh of another animal. And baking was a

hobby..now it's going to be a no-no. It's been over a month since I made a loaf

of bread. And it has already lost it's place in my mind..Notice I keep

mentioning MIND and KNOW. For myself that is where any huge life style change

has to start. Head first.

I am glad I discovered the concept of the raw foods. I can't think my life won't

be better within limits of common sense. I tend to be a little lax in that

department sometimes. But I have a lot at stake so I have a lot of incentive.

Can y'all tell I am very excited about this? I got up early, got my credit card

out handy..just waiting until time to call the VitaMix company and give them Lea

Ann's code.

Speaking of Lea Ann. I found some videos of her demonstrating the Vitamix

yesterday. She's a beautiful girl and smart. It's hard to believe she's going to

have a Birthday that ends in a zero soon, I found over the years those are the

ones that grab your attention after the real biggie. 21.

I think I am doing the right thing to entrust the rest of my life into her

capable hands.

Good for you that you are choosing "health"! It is a "mind" decision to change your life. And it has to be your decision. Health professionals, family members, friends can all tell you but until you decide for yourself to take back control, it won't work.

As a Physical Therapist, I would like to recommend aquatic exercise and seeing a good PT for core strengthening as well as leg stretching and strengthening. Obesity, poor posture, core and leg muscle tightness and weakness/muscle imbalance are HUGE issues with chronic back pain. It isn't a quick fix but over time you will see improvement if you stick with it.

I love the Vitamix and learn very much from this group. Just soak it all in and apply it. If it's ok I would like to recommend a website that has a wealth of information. http://www.mercola.com/ There is information on there about Nutritional typing which I found extremely helpful.

Good luck to .

Take care,
