This was posted on the other Vitamix user group:

A tip for you...the secrete ingredient in a Starbucks Frap is xanthan gum. Its a

natural gum base that is a thickener (a lot of gluten free people will use

xanthan to thicken foods) and it gives that Starbucks mouthfeel and it will keep

your homemade frap from separating. It might seem expensive for that little bag

of powder....but you only need a tiny bit and it lasts forever.

Does anyone have any negatives for xanthan gum?

vanilla almond milk (commercial Almond Breeze version, but the lower calorie

vanilla) and heaping spoonful or two of instant coffee in the container and buzz

until you can't hear the morsels anymore. Then I go and measure 3/4 of the tall

glass of ice and then add that into the container and finish buzzing it. You

can add a frozen banana if you desire or some yougurt I am sure or another

flavor if chips. Experiment, whatever you do it will be delicious and cheaper

than Starbucks. You already made the big investment on your Vitamix!

If you have any type of food allergies, xanthum gum is best avoided. It is

mostly made from corn derivitives, but can also contain wheat or soy starch, and

it does contain sulfites. Probably not a problem for those without allergies,

but it is OFTEN touted in " allergy friendly " recipes, although it is one of the

biggest allergens out there due to the fact that it isn't made consisitently

with the same ingredients, and has a lot of unlabeled allergens in it. Just a

heads up.

I seem to always have to remind myself the differences between xanthan gum and guar gum, so I found a blog post from Bob's Red Mill that describes them well and have added it to the group's Files folder. One thing I do know about the two is that Bob's Red Mill xantham gum ($10.99 to $15.49 for 8 oz.) is 2 to 3 times the price of Bob's Red Mill guar gum ($4.62 to $9.39 for 8 oz.) , at least where I live. There are much cheaper brands, such as NOW at netrition.com, not to mention cost effective shipping rates. I live in a rural area and don't have GNC or other whole foods or health-related shops, so online shopping is my main mode of retail therapy. I wish I had a Trader

Joe's in our area, I hear they are marvelously diverse. Anyway, I digress, just wanted to let some of you know the differences between xanthan and guar gums. :o)

Glucomannan scares me even more,, since most of it comes from China, and

although knojac is typically the source, soy always tends to show up in it too.

I try to avoid ALL things that come from China. If I feel the need for any

added thickening or " mouthfeel " in anything, I typically turn to chia seed gel,

flax gel, or tapioca gel, since we KNOW what is in those, lol.

The vitamix is not just a BLENDER. I personally love the fact that lets us know what is and isn't healthy. It was my understanding that this group was about using the Vitamix to it's fullest potential and to get more fruits and vegetable into our bodies to improve our health. I would rather read about why something isn't heathy for us and then research more to determine if it is something I want to injest or forget about....and why. For me, if I didn't want to get healthier using my Vitamix, I wouldn't have joined this group and just used the internet for recipes without worry about what products are not good for us.PatOn Jun 7, 2012, at 5:23 PM, Ruhnke wrote:, i do not understand why EVERY post about anyone and their suggestions has to be about your allergy problems? How nice that you and your family are so healthy that you have

no health problems for the VitaMix to help you deal with. Perhaps

you could have a little more sympathy in light of the fact that so

many members of this group not only experience health problems for

which they come here, but discuss them almost daily, trying to find

solutions. I would ask that you consider the feelings of all members

of the group , before going after anyone, or otherwise. This

group , as I understand it was not started ONLY as a Blender group.

It was started so we could discuss any and all issues for which we

bought our VitaMix or intend to buy one. There is another VitaMix

group out there, as well as a forum at the VitaMix company site.

Walk a mile in , or anyone else's shoes before you jump on

their case.

Velda who suffers from food and environmental allergies, as well as

arthritis and other maladies and who prefers Organic everything when

she can get it.

I vote for tolerance. We can always choose to skim over things we don't find interesting. If someone has a passionate interest they will likely filter most of what they read through the lens that their interest creates, and respond in a way that reflects their interest. Even if I am not interested in those things myself, I can skip over their posts. Terri On Jun 7, 2012, at 5:38 PM, Pat K. wrote:

I put the whole list on moderation in response to this post to prevent the possibility of a flame war starting. This post never should have gone to the list - it should have been posted directly to off-list (and it should have been a polite request rather than a shaming condemnation of 's efforts to help people). If anyone has "issues" with - please share them directly with (off list), and politely and I am sure that she will respond in kind. has emailed off list (as this whole issue should have been handled in the first place). Her feelings are understandably hurt. Those of us who have been here a long time know 's heart - how much she cares and how much of her time she selflessly devotes to helping people. She sees the world through the lens of HER experiences and because of them she has knowledge that she has selflessly shared and blessed others. We are all different and we all have different diets, and we are all on journey to do the best that we can with the knowledge that we have at this point. I've allowed a few posts on this topic to go through, but I think it is best to let this rest and re-focus. This will be the last post on the list on this topic, but I invite anyone who wants to offer their support to contact off list - I am sure that she will appreciate it. So, I have not posted before, but saw this thread and had to post. After having

my expensive xantham gum go bad and ruin my bread, I decided I needed to find a

substitute. I use gelatin instead of xantham gum. Thickens really well and good

for your nails. Substitution is one to one, one tsp of xantham gum, one tsp of

gelatin. You can buy gelatin anywhere.

coming in late here, but I know I avoided frapps from the "buck" for a reason! I think already addressed this(haven't seen her post yet, but I bet I will!), xanthum gum contains sulfites, big allergy aggrevater and can also make migraines worse(raising hand here)anyway, your mileage might vary, but not for me.CaitlynOn 2012-06-07, at 9:25 AM, flnancy1958 wrote:

> I combine a handful of white chocolate chip morsels and half a tall glass of vanilla almond milk (commercial Almond Breeze version, but the lower calorie vanilla) and heaping spoonful or two of instant coffee in the container and buzz until you can't hear the morsels anymore. Then I go and measure 3/4 of the tall glass of ice and then add that into the container and finish buzzing it. You can add a frozen banana if you desire or some yougurt I am sure or another flavor if chips. Experiment, whatever you do it will be delicious and cheaper than Starbucks. You already made the big investment on your Vitamix!
