I have a question relating to testing out what works in regards to tweaking

food....

How long do you long-timers try out a different eating routine to see if it

does anything? Like the flax seed oil...would it take a week to actually be

able to tell if it's having any effect? Or changing the order or types of

carbs... Just how long (minimum) should a person wait to see what type of

effect it's having, either none, positive or negative?

Thanks

You know, and this is just a personal thing...I don't think it is

going to make a great deal of difference. I would do either...and I

would also get in the habit of some flax seed oil in the shake or in

some other meal...

If everything else is right (meals, water, work out to intensity,

cardio to intensity, sleep, free meal) I think you would be able to

do either.

Stasia and others may feel differently but in my efforts, the extra

few grams of carbs in the shake didn't change anything...in fact, my

last meal for awhile was a cup of low fat cottage cheese and a green

apple religiously. Didn't effect anything...lost body fat...even

with eating a whole pizza on a Free Day (and I am not advocating

that, by the way!) :)

Good luck...just be consistant.

Hi ,

I will let Stasia answer the bulk of this as she is the pro

here...but as far as flax seed oil...even if I didn't see a change, I

would still do it. It is so good for you and even if it doesn't

visably change anything for you in the fat loss department...it is

wonderful to the body.

I saw a mild change with the flax seed oil. It did make my coat nice

and shiny though :) Really, my hair and skin changed...

As far as the changing or tweaking...that is such a hard thing to

measure. I think I did my first Challenge pretty close to the way it

should be...and I reaped the best results. And granted, I cheated

amnd missed alot of work outs and ate like a animal on free days. It

seemed when I tweaked more, it didn't do much. In fact, the stricter

I got, the less body fat left the body. Go figure.

I am very happy with my usual 1.7 pounds a week. I didn't have that

when I tweaked...I must have over tweaked and my body wasn't getting

enough or too much. The BFL system works as suggested. Looking

back, I would do the full 12 weeks as stated...no tweaking. Then

assess.

If you tweak too much, you lose your mind as you will never know what

worked, what didn't. I think that the body has it's own pattern and

time schedule...try BFL the way it is presented and then see what you

may want to do diferently. And keep in mind, I saw most of my

results at week 10. I almost gave up and then overnight it seemd I

dropped two pants sizes.

Where are you now on your Challenge? What are you thinking about

tweaking? That may help in responses here...

Hey -

I completed one 12-week challenge from July to September of this year and I

actually reaped the majority of the benefits in the first 6 weeks. My

lowest recorded weight and body fat % were 151lbs and 18% body fat. At that

point I got " satisfied " and pretty much slacked in the eating area - a sweet

here and there, maybe not six meals/day. I seem to have my weakest moments

in the afternoon and evenings.

I didn't really start gaining anything back until recently, when I put my

lower back into spasm and could hardly move. I didn't eat clean at all, and

of course couldn't exercise. I'm just now getting back into the exercising

(after about 4 weeks), which I think will make a big difference in how

" puffy " I feel. I'm one of those people who is going to get back into the

full swing of it after Christmas - I don't want to completely stress myself

out by feeling deprived. We'll be travelling down South for Christmas

(leaving tomorrow actually) and there is absolutely no way I'm going to be

able to eat clean while I'm there. I will do my best and not totally hog

out, but man - my mother-in-law is making peanut-butter balls! My all-time

favorite! But I am going to bring some AdvantEdge Carb Control bars and

I'll try to get to Walmart and buy a tub of protein powder to use as quick

protein fixes while I'm there.

I'll have to report back in when I'm eating 100% clean (which I've never

done - even in the beginning when I lost the most) and hitting my 10's more

often. I get paranoid about muscle soreness because I have 2 kids at home

with me and it's hard to deal with them when it's hard to move!

I had a goal earlier when I started a second challenge, but I lost my

" oopmf " and then got hurt. So my goal for myself to reach by the time it

gets warm again (around May or June) is to get to 15% body fat and 150 lbs

or less. Last time I got it checked it was around 20%, now it's probably

more like 22-24%.

So thanks for your response, and make sure you keep active on the board for

when I get back into the eating part full-swing. Hopefully Santa will bring

me the new Eating for Life book to give me some more ideas on how to make

meals a little more exciting.

I have heard that it is good to skip your carb for your last meal. I am not

sure of the reasoning but I think it helps you burn fat and sleep better. I

normally eat both my carb and protein before bed. Sometimes I eat an EAS carb

sense candy bar, but normally I eat oatmeal and cottage cheese or cottage

cheese and strawberries. It would be just fine for you to skip your carb this

meal. If you find it hard to stay on the diet when skipping the carb this meal,

then add it back in. It is better to stick to the diet and lose weight

slower, then to blow the diet.

I weigh myself everyday. If I have changed something and I gain weight the

next day, I usually will stay away from that food.

Hmmm...I think that is going to torture you needlessly...

I weigh myself every day to get the average and to see how much I do

flucuate (and I do up to 7 or 8 pounds depending on water intake,

time of day, pre-pms, salkt factor, etc)...not to see if something is

working or not.

Something can be working and if you weigh yourself and you happen to

have had a salty or processed meal (like turket breast or cottage

cheese) you may show a increase on the scale and you won't know that

it is realing working. Read (or re-read) 's article. It is my

Bible of Reality when it comes to scale issues.

I actually like to see the wild ranges of weight as I really know

that I haven't gained 4 pounds when I have eaten cleanly and

perfectly...it also allows me to know that my scale is not an

accurate creature of what is working or how much " body fat " I am

losing.

I wouldn't do the disservice to yourself to use the scale that way.

I think what Stasia and wrote about this topic is right on.

Alot of this program is mental...just do it and let the body do it's

thing. If you do weigh yourself, get into the mental set that it is

not an accurate picture and then forget about that number. I can

flip myself out when I stay the same weight for weeks on end or even

gain when I know I am eating clean and doing everything as I should.

I freak out, write for help, and keep going.

It actually doesn't drive me crazy. I do not stress at all about my weight.

I rarely even lose weight. I just lost a pound last week. I was pretty

excited because I have not lost a pound in 2 or 3 months. It helps me to

monitor

how what I eat affects my weight. I only have about 2 pounds to lose and if I

never lost it it would not make or break me. I read somewhere that people

who lose weight and keep it off weigh themselves often. I think it is just how

your attitude about the scale is and I do not worry, I just enjoy tracking.

Before I did BFL, I would only weigh myself on Mondays, because if I had a

really good week and my weight was down on Friday I would eat more over the

week-end as a reward. weighing myself also helps o keep me on track. If my

weight

is up, I know I have to stick to BFL eating and if it is down I am highly

motivated to stick with it. I may be the exception to the rule, I am realizing

after reading this board that I am in many ways.

I really don't gain weight to easily unless I eat too much fat. I gain

weight on my free day, when I cheat and sometimes when I eat meat that is too

high

in fat. For example, one time I had egg noodles and pot roast and the next

day I gained weight. I then realized I shouldn't eat that much fat. I now eat

a scoop of natural peanut butter everyday and it has not affected my weight at

all, in fact I lost a pound last week. So, I feel comfortable with eating

it. I am in a different situation than most people on this board. I have been

doing this for one year and I have lost most of the wieght I want to lose. My

goal is to weigh 120 lbs and be 14% body fat. I only have 2 more pounds to

go, and as I stated in another post I am not concerned with losing it fast. It

takes me about 2 to 3 months to lose a pound. I also think I must have a

high metabolism, because I don't gain weight easily.
