Can some of you share what > your guidelines/experiences have been? > > Thanks> Emmy ParkesEmmy,I don't know if you are familiar with the publication Beyond Change, but there was an excellent article on ETOH after gastric bypass surgery in the July '03 edition. The article specifically explains the mechanism to why ETOH has such a profound effect on the post op patient. It explains that ETOH goes directly from the stomach pouch, to the jujunum, which has a much larger surface area than the duodenum (which is bypassed), thus getting rapidly absorbed. It also explains that in addition to "anatomical changes in the GI tract" the GB patient is more sensitive to the intoxicating effects of ETOH b/c of reduced calorie intake. The article then specifically discusses the malnutrition effects that ETOH can have. All and all, the article concludes by saying that ETOH is not recommended during the "Rapid Weight Loss Phase" which is considered to be the 1st 6 mo after surgery. However, with time, there is no reason that an indiviual should not be able to enjoy an occasional drink, provided they are aware that it only takes a small amt of ETOH to prduce an effect. If you would like a copy of the article, I'd be more than happy to send it to you. Just email me directly.Sincerely, Lacasse, RD, CD-NCenter for Bariatric SurgeryHartford, CT
