I am like you though and would not use the extra virgin for that reason. I really like olive oil in a scrub or most anything though. I think it is fine to use canola or safflower or other oils you can buy in the supermarket. Keep in mind that some oils/butters have a longer shelf-life than others and that may be a factor for you if you plan to sell them. I like using several different oils (olive, jojoba, maybe canola) plus shea butter. The reason for a preservative is primarily because through use, it is very likely that water will get into the mix and promote microbial growth. I don't use a preservative in the ones I make for myself, because I know exactly how it will be used and they are used quickly---there's no way of knowing when it is out of your own hands. So to be on the safe side--it is best to use a preservative. If there is anyone here from cosmeticinfo, correct me if I am wrong, but I think we are recommending something like Germaben II-E or LiquaPar PE, since the formulation is mostly oil. Hope this helps. Guest guest
2 quick questions. 1. If I buy Olive Oil at the Supermarket for Body Scrub, is there a specific type I should or shouldn't use? I was thinking, wouldn't I want to stay away from Extra Virgin since it usually has a strong scent? Also, can I use Safflower or Canola or some other cooking oil? 2. Since it will be salt, oil & melted soap, do I really need to add a preservative? Thanks for everyone's help.

Liquapar or Phenonip for the scrubs. Germaben 11-E is for oil/water lotions and creams. You don't need very much. I use Liquapar at 0.2%. For anyone else making scrubs, don't forget that you also need a antioxidant like mixed tocopherols or BHT to prevent your oils from going rancid. Pat. Guest guest
I use a preservative called Uniphen. It is the same stuff as Phenonip. If you use 100 grams of oil in your mixture you will want 1 gram of Uniphen. Remember, you are adding the preservative to the oil and not the salt/sugar. **************************************************************** Sweet Scents Soap Supplies http://www.sweetscentsoap.com/soapsupplies.htm Pigments, Clay, EWax, Stearic Acid, Uniphen ****************************************************************
