Guest guest
Ashely, The general nausea can be tamed with phenergan suppositories. However, a lot of the time the nausea my patients experience is from taking in too much liquid or too fast, so make sure this isn't the case before suggesting the rx. Also, varying the temperature of the liquids (no extreme hot or extreme cold liquids) can also help. Hope this helps. >>> earich1976@... 06/13/03 11:27AM >>> Hello! I am a new member and have really enjoyed reading the messages so far. It is nice to know that there are others out there dealing with similar issues! Do you all have a lot of patients complain about constant nausea for the first 4-6 weeks after gastric bypass surgery?? If so, what do you suggest?? I am having hard time coming up with things to tell them. Of course, flat, diet gingerale is always an option but it doesn't seem to work! Thanks to anyone who can help! Guest guest
Fortunately I haven’t heard that complain much with population I’ve seen. However it’s my understanding that there often isn’t much ginger in most gingerales – mostly flavoring. If I wanted the effect of ginger, I would recommend sipping on ginger tea with artificial sweetener if desired. Otherwise I would recommend eating the small amounts of foods tolerated, separated from the liquids. I am wondering if anxiety regarding eating is a factor? I look forward to hearing other thoughts. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ J. Guest guest
Thanks for your input! One patient that I talked to attributed the nausea to her iron supplementation (Chromagen), so that one I figured out. A lady I spoke with today said that her nausea does not seem to be related to her food/liquid intake. She said she feels sick to her stomach ALL DAY no matter what she does. The phenergan suppositories are a good idea. The surgeon that I work with only allows his patients protein (NO CARBS, except a few from non-starchy vegetables) because he likes to keep them in ketosis as long as possible. He does not allow them to eat anything with carbohydrates until they get to their goal weight. Of course they cheat, but this really concerns me. Have you all ever heard of surgeon's managing their patients this way? He won't even let them have fruits, even after long conversations with me. I wonder if this might be causing nausea. Any ideas on this sort of diet would be greatly welcomed!! > Fortunately I haven't heard that complain much with population I've > seen. Guest guest
For nausea we recommend: 1) if it occurs in the morning to nibble on saltine crackers. 2) do not drink fluid for 1 hour before or after meals. 3) eat slowly. Take a full three minutes between bites. 4) avoid foods which ahve caused nausea in the past. 5) avoid foods that have a strong odor or flavor. 6) avoid foods or drinks that are high in sugar or fat. 7) use Lactaid with dairy products if you don;t tolerate them well. 8) Take all vitamins after meals, never on an empty stomach. Hope this helps. Penny(IL) > Hello! > I am a new member and have really enjoyed reading the messages so > far.
