Guest guest
Nuts and nut butters are healthy fats but they're not a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. Flax oil and salmon are probably the best source if you're looking for fat loss benefits. There's a great series of posts saved in the club Files section called Flax Oil.doc. /files/ . And since it's been a hot topic lately, here's my Flax/CLA re-post: ~~~ CLA, flax, and Udos are all different oils that serve slightly different purposes. Flax and Udos are essential fatty acids. Flax oil is heavy on Omega 3 fatty acids (so is fish oil). That's great for fat loss. You're right if you take excessive amounts of flax or fish oil to the exclusion of all other oils you might possibly create an imbalance. That's not a problem for the majority of people because Omega 6 is still abundant in other things we eat. Udos is a balanced blend of Omega 3 and Omega 6. Has the same benefits as flax. It's just a matter of taste, variety, and whether you're worried about this hypothetical imbalance from taking only flax. CLA is a different creature entirely. It's a good-for-you fat but it's not interchangeable with flax and Udos. It works differently. It's not a magic fat loss pill. The results are subtle. It works better in animal studies than in people studies. The latest things I've read show that it works better for preventing re-gain of body fat than for losing it in the first place. If you take CLA during a bulking cycle, you'll supposedly gain less fat and more lean mass. It might possibly cause a greater loss of abdominal fat, or spare lean mass when you restrict calories. Read up on it. It's good stuff, but expensive considering the subtlety of what it actually does. Go to someplace like SupplementWatch.com and look up anything you're thinking about taking. You should always look up the safety, dosage, and effectiveness is before buying a new supplement. Here's CLA http://www.supplementwatch.com/supatoz/supplement.asp?supplementId=88 Here's Flax http://www.supplementwatch.com/supatoz/supplement.asp?supplementId=126 ~~~ Personally, I quit taking CLA because the results were sooooo subtle that I decided it was a waste of time. :-) It's one of those things that apparently makes rats and chickens really buff but doesn't have much of an impact in the real world. Now, it's possible that I wasn't taking enough to notice a difference. I was taking 3g a day. I've heard bodybuilders say that you may have to take 4-6g a day to see benefits (...in the mirror, I'm sure there are invisible health benefits at lower dosages). With flax oil, the benefits are much more obvious. Right away you have reduced cravings and increased fat loss. After a few weeks you notice your hair is shiny, your skin isn't as dry, and your joints feel better. If you get your cholesterol checked, your blood lipids will have improved. Triglycerides will be down and HDL will be up. There are good, immediate, measurable results from flax. So, that's what I take consistently. Oil question Is is true that if I eat a T of natural peanut butter a day that I don't need to take the oil stuff? I keep hearing about this Udo's. Do I really need it? Thanks in advance!! Guest guest
Eeek - According to the posts in the file, says 1 tbsp per 45 lbs, or 20% of caloric intake. Do you count your flax as part of your calories? Libby P.S. I am going for maximum fat loss this challenge! Guest guest
Libby, I haven't taken flax as of yet, but I think the majority of the women in the group don't count it with the calories because you'd drive yourself bonkers trying to stay within range. Because it's high in fats but it's the healthy kind. Guest guest
This comes up every couple of months. Most ladies here take 1-2 T. spreak out in two-three doses regardless of body weight, and, no, they don't count it toward their daily calorie intake. dani > OK , how MUCH flax oil?
