Guest guest
Hi Beth, It had kind of a drag instead of a glide....although some feedback I've received already points to my use of beeswax and honey in the body butter... So I need to reevaluate this.... In my reading - it seems that if you are adding pure honey to a body butter (without water) you need an emulsifier - being lecithin, beeswax, borax combo, etc. Some of what I read said you need beeswax with honey - in a body butter - so I tried it... wasn't what I expected. I made another - without the honey and beeswax which I've been using all week. I wanted to experiment with the use of honey - but still researching:) > > > > > > > Hello everyone, > > > > I'm experimenting with making body butters. Guest guest
I see. It is hard to emulsify honey, being water-based, into an oil-based product. My own results for lip balm were only sometimes successful, so I quit putting it in. I don't know why you would NEED beeswax w/ honey, though. Is it to help emulsify? Have you ever tried whipping shea butter instead of cocoa butter? I never thought CB would whip up well, but now I'm curious. Maybe I'll try mango butter, too. How did the sans honey and beeswax formula work out for you? Guest guest
I make my whipped butter with mango and cocoa butter. I originally did just cocoa butter because i didn't have a large supply of mango but it worked out ok with the cocoa butter. Previously i used cocoa butter, cherry kernel oil, glycerine and Natrasorb. I wanted something a bit more luxurious so I added the mango and babasu oil. Either way are still good. BTW how are you melting your oils. I find it easiestin a double boiler then the microwave. The mircrowave just seems to heat the bowl alot vs melting the oils. I worry about the bowl breaking. It might be too much beeswax, giving you the problem. I wonder, would soywax work?? it is a bit creamier to allow it to glide better. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hello everyone, > > > > > > > > I'm experimenting with making body butters. Guest guest
I melt my hard oils completely in a double boiler and then add my liquid oils (I don't use beeswax, but sometimes a little stearic acid) and whip a little. I then replace my hot water with cold tap water and mix well. I let it sit until it starts hardening and then whip for awhile. I keep coming back to it until it's about the consistency I want. It takes a long time, but I like the result. Guest guest
Hi Pat, I know what you mean. I have struggled with my body butters too. When I do a simple recipe and melt the butters then whip them, it comes out great but then sets up in a non-whip way. It sets up hard but it does melt when it touches the skin. I have seen people put e-wax, stearic acid, and other ingredients I have seen in lotions. I am going to attempt to experiment again soon. Good luck! > > Hello everyone, > > I'm experimenting with making body butters. Guest guest
The big difference came for me when I started using the whipping attachment on my mixer, rather than the regular mixing whatever-you-call-its or my stick blender. It blends more air in the mixture. Guest guest
i don't have thoughs. I just have bread dough blades and regular beaters. Ya know what problem I have with doing any kind og whipped item (butters, foaming bath butter....) is making all the batches the same. Some are more dense and weigh more per volume then other batches. I think we should have a whipping demo. lol lol > > > > > > Hello everyone, > > > > > > I'm experimenting with making body butters.
