Guest guest
I've noticed that nobody has mentioned Germaban when talking about preservatives - do you all not use it for some reason? Is there any difference in preservatives? Thanks, Deborah

Guest guest
I have never heard of treating your essential oils with rosemary extract. Could you please give an example of this. Also, how much benzoin do you add per batch of soap? Thanks again to all who contribute, I have learned so much. One more question--what is the difference between sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. I have seen recipes for both but have only used the sodium hydroxide for my soaps. Guest guest
Hi- I'm Kerri, and I realize that I've not properly introduced myself to you fine folks. I started soaping last Christmas. Started with MP and have graduated to CP and lotions and bath salts and scrubs. I even sell some to the friends at work. The only preservative I ever use if Germaben II. It stands up to heat, and is good for using in products that may have water introduced like my body scrubs. I use it in my lotions while the mixture is still hot, before I even begin to mix. When I add my Vitamin E and essential oils. I make alot of creme that I keep in my locked truck during this 90 degree weather and I've never had any separate or go bad on me. Guest guest
> What would be the best preservatives to use in lotions, salves and soaps? if any > Sharon, You won't need a preservative in your soap normally. If you are going to add something like mashed banana or ground up carrot or cucumber or that sort of thing, what I do is add some benzoin to my mixture and haven't had a problem. I kept out a bar of some avacado soap that I made 2yrs. ago just to see what would happen with it and it is still just fine. I make several different salves but do not put preservatives in them-I do treat all my oils as I purchase them with Rosemary Oil Extract as an anti-oxidant and haven't had a prob. there either. I use either Germaben 11 or Germal Plus in my lotions and creams. If I make a lotion using an herbal tea mix instead of just all water I use Phenonip. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Hi , I use Germall Plus. It's really easy to use, just add it to your lotion when the temp reaches about 90 degrees or so. I add my essential oils at the same time, after everything is emulsified. You may have to adjust your recipe, so that the preservative and the e.o's and/or f.o.'s don't dilute your product too much. If a recipe doesn't include the fragrance and preservative, I figure out how much I need to add and then deduct that amount from the water portion as I am making the recipe. Right now I am using preservatives at a 1% rate, but in reality I can go lower, I just haven't quite got that far in the math department yet! Here is a link on Germal Plus. http://pawmadesoap.safeshopper.com/100/cat100.htm?395 Hope that helps. I too looked for a " natural " preservative, but there really isn't one, and some day I'll be selling my products and need to know that they won't be growing horrible little buggies that can cause all sorts of awfull problems. Have a great day. Leanna in Alberta.
Guest guest
You are right, water CAN be introduced to any product used. So if one is concerned that this will be an eventuality, then of course, use an oil type preservative. Most all oil preservatives do contain Parbens however, and I for one am very allergic to any products containing parabens, it causes my skin to burn and peel. Ouch! So what I tell my customers is to use products with Clean, DRY hands only. Sherry _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. Guest guest
Sherry, I agree, the drawbacks of the parabens makes them a double aged sword. I, too, have considered carefully explaining to people about water so I could leave them out(of course, that doesn't work in a wholesale account but does at shows)but I used to work in an industry where I saw people do 'incredibly' stupid things and then try to blame the maker of the product or the seller or whoever for their own stupidity. As cynical and sad as it sounds, I never underestimate the ability of a consumer to do truly dumb things and then try to blame it on someone else. It seems to be the nature of our world these days...at least in the US, Therefore, I have reluctantly decided to use the parabens(and I *really* hate doing that!..lol)hoping to narrow the field for accidents. I do clearly label with the fact that they are in there...that's the best I can do, I'm afraid. Sigh. Thanks for the comments, Re: preservatives > > You are right, water CAN be introduced to any product used. Guest guest
Keep in mind that Aubrey Organics is a company that sells " natural " toiltries. I would toss that one. They have selling in mind. I the other one is by Ruth Winters, I would tend more to this as a reference. May cause, is differnt then does cause. Stearic acid sounds confusing as it's naturally found in all sorts of things. Even chocolate, and most oils which are solid at room temperatures. http://www.snowdriftfarm.com has a section where you can " Ask the Chemist " , and there is also a toiletries chemisty list somewhere where you can join to get a lot of information. I'm sure someone on this list can point you in the right direction for that. Hope this has helped. in Cambridge Thank you all for your time. I look forward to any and all responses. Guest guest
>How do people work out the amount of preservative to use in creams and >lotions? go by the manufacturer's suggested amounts...that will be a % age based on the TOTAL weight of ingredients... ie, a formula, not a recipe. Ok, now that makes sense. If you know your finished formula weight 16 ounces, then you would base it on that. I was going head over soyburgers with that. Math gives me panic attacks. Guest guest
I just read something in the information section of the Rainbow Meadow website about using Rosemary EO as a preservative in lotions. Very interesting and I think I might try it. I haven't had any problems yet, but when you think of how people put their not-so-clean fingers in the cream all the time it's a miracle I haven't. Thanks everybody for your input! Maggie Central New York, USA www.bundaflicka.etsy.com
