I have applied - got my Social Worker (after 8 mths wait) and going to try and get the ball in motion! Nic x Re: DLA - autism Just to add to the list, we get higher rate DLA and lower rate mobility. I decided against applying to local authority for a blue badge as we do son rise full time at home so apart from once a week to gym club Joe doesn't really go anywhere where we could use a disabled parking space. My understanding is also that it is the night waking that incurs the higher rate. The mobility was granted on appeal, originally they said Joe didn't need any more care than his peers when walking outside, not true. He was 6 when we got this, also 6 when we got higher rate DLA instead of middle - at first review. We have been awarded 6 hrs per week direct payments,recruiting now, can't believe the response I have sent out 17 application forms! This was granted on appeal, original award was 1 hr per week. Fingers crossed it's backdated to 26/09/04 (they lost the papers for a year!). Currently we get lower rate of mobility, so backdated arrears in full should be over £1,000, I guess. Had Jacks annual review today only to discover (and only cos I asked the Q) that there may not be any secondary provision suitable for J in Wilts and hes only a year off secondary!!! We really need either a move or yet another battle with the LEA right now!! Think I'll just go for that extra glass of wine for now !!! Guest guest Posted February 21, 2006 Report Share Posted February 21, 2006 AS it so happens our local fledgling parent support group STAAR (Supporting Together Autism and Aspergers in Redbridge) are holding a meeting on 1st March. the topic is benefits and the local benefits team will be talking about DLA, CA etc. and members will also be throwing in local knowledge such as free cinema tickets for carers etc. If any of you live in or near Redbridge (north east London ) and want to attend let me know. Otherwise I shall feed back to the group. We have just reapplied for Dla as is approaching 5 and was due a review. Until now we get middle rate DLA, carers allowance and blue badge and now allocated parking spot outside house and free congestion charge. Previously we got free nappies. Fingers crossed we will get higher rates as we now do have to tend to him at night and he has a habit of lashing out at middle aged men who pass him on the street (Grumpy Old Men Syndrome). Guest guest Posted February 21, 2006 Report Share Posted February 21, 2006 The tax disc is given automatically if you get the mobility component and opt for a car, the car dealer sorts it out I don't know what the procedure is if you don't apply for a car but would assume you must apply for the disc seperately. Guest guest Posted February 22, 2006 Report Share Posted February 22, 2006 Just to clear up the points made. The blue badge has to be applied for through the council if a car is not being bought. Details in your yellow pages. The Tax Disc has to be applied for through DVLA. That is why so many people do not get to know about the other things on top of the higher mobility rate as the onus is on you to apply to each department not given as an automatic right.
