Tonya/eating before a workout

I feel very weak doing cardio in the mornings, it's all I can do to get through it. I think it is because I don't eat anything after dinner the night before which is around 4ish. So I go a long time before eating again. I get right up and eat breakfast, but I don't think it's enough to do the trick quite yet. My energy level is like night and day comparing morning or evening workouts.

For breakfast I change it up. Sometimes I have oatmeal with a tablespoon of protein powder along with a banana. Sometimes I have a couple egg whites and toast or some days I have a protein bar with a piece of fruit, a waffle or even some cold cereal like Total or cheerios. I usually don't eat anything after my workout except on weight training days I will have a protein shake afterwards. Someone told me that some people's chemical systems are just not up to power certain times of the day. I don't know.

I have been getting up at 5:30am for the past few days and have been

working out--without breakfast/preworkout snack. I'm not hungry so I

just drink a little water and more during the wokout. Though I do feel

hungry after the workout.

more fat if you workout in the morning don't take into account that

exercise is going to burn glycogen first no matter what. Lower

glycogen stores may mean less to burn, but that also means less blood

glucose, so you could have a low blood sugar reaction to exercise

before eating. This would mean feeling light headed, dizzy, or

nauseous. You're always better to properly fuel your muscles before

working out so you can get a better workout in. My recommendation, do

whatever fits into your schedule.

Stacey,

As long as you don't experience the symptoms of low blood sugar, that is fine. Unfortunately, the people suggesting that people go and workout without eating, don't think to warn people that "some" people can't do that safely. Anyone predisposed to blood sugar disorders needs to eat first. If you aren't predisposed to those things, you should be fine working out without eating.

What do you eat for breakfast? You are doing some very hard workouts

and probably need more energy than I do! do you eat a post workout snack?

I eat dinner at 6:30-so it hasn't been as long overnight for me.

Protein powder...hmm... that sounds right up my alley! I have never took any kind of supplements..wait, that's not the right word, is it? Anyway, I think I should invest in some of that. Is it safe to give my 3 year old as well? He's such a veggie and fruit lover, he doesn't get too much protein.

Tonya, for me it depends on what kind of exercise I'm doing and for how long. If I'm going to walk for 30 minutes then I can do it without eating beforehand. But if I'm going to my hour long swim class I need to eat something small. Ditto for my 2+ hour volleyball league Tuesday mornings.

My kids drink protein shakes with me all the time. Our favorite is a Strawberry Banana Smoothie.

1 banana

4 or 5 strawberries, frozen

8 ounces unsweetened orange juice

1 scoop vanilla protein powder

Mix in blender until smooth. Makes one serving.
