Guest guest
Hi there, I decided to take all of my soap scraps and those that lost their scent and such and rebatch them. I took 2 pounds of soap shreds and added 24 oz of water. That was yesturday afternoon. This afternoon they are still really soft and I can't unmold them yet. (decided to try some fancy plastic molds and metal jello molds.) Did I use too much water? It was the amount that the book told me to use on rebatching. is this normal? to still be so soft? probably right? Thanks for your help. oh PS, I totally ruined 1 of those nice big spatulas we got at last years gathering. had to throw it out. I left it in the pot while menting the soap down and left the room for a few minutes as the stove heated up. what a shame those were so nice. OH well. lesson learned. Guest guest
Definitely too much water, Koala. This one is going to take awhile, I'm afraid. As soon as it gets dried out enough, you can slice it and finish drying it. It'll probably shrink, and maybe even wrinkle, but in time, it will be useable. Guest guest
AWWWW man. well that does stink as I used all individual molds and I want to use them again on another batch. lol lol go figure. Ok so definatly too much water. I wonder if i read it wrong or if the book screwed up. I will have to look into it again and restudy rebatching. Thanks for the info. > > Definitely too much water, Koala. This one is going to take awhile, I'm afraid. As soon as it gets dried out enough, you can slice it and finish drying it. Guest guest
Rebatching is a skill in itself, particularly in knowing how much liquid to add. Too little and it won't " melt,' too much and you have glop that takes forever to dry. It's hard to know how much to use and it's equally hard instructing someone else. If the shreds are old and dry, you'll need more than if the soap is fresh. I doubt you'll ever need more than 2 T/lb. of base, though. FYI, adding a bit of glycerine helps to wet and soften the soap base, also. Guest guest
Kbear, try this.. what do you have to loose. Put the soaps in the molds in the freezer, get them hard and try to unmold and let them airdry on a papertowl or drying rack if you can. Shaye Re: rebatching help/ info needed plz AWWWW man. well that does stink as I used all individual molds and I want to use them again on another batch. lol lol go figure. Guest guest
That's a good idea, Shaye. And, if it doesn't work the first time, try it again a few days later until they do come out. YEah the soap is fairly old. well most of it. Some is a wee bit soft too much honey and super fatting. but i figure the other harder soap will help even it out.definatly less water though next time. ALOT less. lol lol I did rebatch once before when i was just starting with soap LONG LONG time ago but i have no idea where i got my info from or where it went to. i dont think i did too good then either. lol try again live and learn. thanks a bunch. > > Rebatching is a skill in itself, particularly in knowing how much liquid to add. Guest guest
i tried the freezer on day one. when they were runny kind of like thick trace. well in essance it was really the gel stage i guess. with a bit of rubbery coating. kind of like cooked pudding lol lol. But i will try again now that they are much firmer. hopefully it will help. I have also been tempted on putting them in the attic. as it is my favorite herb drying place but i worry the heat will not be good or take away all the sent. perhaps i will try both see how i do. lol thanks for the info. i hope all is going well with you by the way. > > > > Definitely too much water, Koala.
